"Sky Songs" for flute duet

Featured Replies

I wrote this last December, for my flute recital. It took me about a week to finish.

My friend Jenny and I played this; after that performance I threw away the score and put the Sibelius file in my Recycle Bin.

I kind of wish I had it back...it wasn't too bad a piece, actually. There are a couple of mistakes in interpretation (we rehearsed this once) but otherwise I think it turned alright. :)

I have no MIDI or MP3, and no score. But here is a YouTube video. I'm on the left (with the suit). Tell me what you think!

Never, and I mean NEVER throw away anything!!

If it was that bad, you could have always returned to it and improved it. I sometimes do to my pieces.

At least you have a nice recording of the performance. You could always transcribe it again!

Very beautiful. You have done very well to create such a tender, romantic feel with just two instruments.

The opening melody is very nice. It is harmonised beautifully and the occassional minor 2nds give it a really heart-tugging sound. The part where the melody is played over a major 2nd trill is particularly nice. Although the first part of the piece heavily sits in a particular key it doesn't get boring, because it is sufficiently interesting.

The modulation at 1:47 could use some reworking in my opinion. I think it would flow better if the one or both instrumentalists kept playing rather than pausing before modulating from A major before going modulating up a minor 6th to F major. It is a beautiful modulation alright, but the pause made it sound ever so slightly akward.

Beautiful runs at 2:08! Good use of inverted pedal as well. I love the way the lower melody holds itself a minor 2nd away creating a brief dissonance, but always resolving itself so pleasingly.

Perhaps a recapitulation of the original opening melody in A would have been nice.

Wonderfully done I have to say! For just two instruments this is a really impressive and full bodied sound, however this would be a great piece to score in the future, for a full orchestra in the vein of goldenage composers like Korngold, Hermann etc. Great stuff! I'd definitely transcribe this. It's worth saving!

I do plan to transcribe this again, but it will be a huge pain. >< And like almacg said, I think I may one day orchestrate this! (Or at least go through a huge revision process...)

Well, thanks so much for the comments! almacg, your analysis really helped! I'll keep these things in mind when I wrote something new, or transcribe this. Thank y'all!

Hey No problem. Sorry that my wording was a bit off though!

:o Who needs grammatically correct sentences eh!?

Keep up the good work!

Haha...I'm a little confused about your comment, dark. ><

That was very good. Some things could have been fixed, but why did you even concieve of throwing it away?

GREAT NEWS!

My friend told me he'd kept a copy of the score when I gave it to him a while back...hence, I've made a couple edits, and HERE IT IS!

Now that there's a score, let me know what you guys think! It's one of my earlier works, and doesn't sound very much like anything I'd write now...but still. Any critique would be great. :]

Why did you throw this away! :O

Besides some minor quirks (may be the performance), this is a very beautiful piece; It reminds me of a meadow in its tranquility.

You should definitely continue transcribing this piece.

Edit: I saw your score after posting. Nice. I'll take a look....

Very nice) beautiful begining, I'm like this. Very importent, that the song are combinate whith the title. I too think, that this composition will be beter heard, when it will be with orchestra. About all composition - maybe it will be beter to make more contrast, but anyway, maybe you wanted to make this piece, like a prelude. I'm too allways want to write music without strong difference between themes.

Beautiful, tender composition:)

@KSP: Thanks! I know, there were multiple mistakes in performance, plus the score at the time hadn't been edited...in the future I'll work on a revision, or an arrangement for orchestra. :D

@Ilya: You're right, I could definitely use more contrast. It was a very short write, and I didn't have much time to write it...had I more time I'd have given it more thought! :]

:) Good Luck!
