Violin Concertino in Gm

Featured Replies

Hi, this is my first post and I am really excited to be a part of the community. I have very recently taken interest in music composition and this is the first piece that I finished, a small violin concertino to play with my high school string orchestra. Thanks for feedback!

welcome to YC for starters

just on first listen the form seems lacking, each independent section is quite enjoyable, however the piece as a whole seems aimless. also related to this fact, the overall length of the piece feels too long, I say "feels" because with more form to the piece the audience has something to aurally grab on to, and therefore it feels less long. aside from the formal issues, I'd say my main criticism is that the piece lacks clear phrasing, and bowing inferences. are you independently bowing all of the unslured notes? the accented syncopations, are they an up bow or a down bow? also, the (2+3+3)/8 is better expressed as 8/8 and beamed accordingly.

none of these things are at all unusual, and quite frankly the fact that you have written a piece of such length and scope is commendable to say the least, you have obvious talent and I look forward to seeing more as you develop and mature in your works. keep up the good work.

thanks for input! i'm currently working with the soloist on putting in bowings and other phrasing, especially for the solo part. i did not want to do too much of that stuff without his input. as for the (2+3+3)/8, i originally wrote that entire part in 15/8 but my orchestra director suggested splitting it up into this signature for improved readability, so i followed his suggestion.

Sounds excellent to me. I truly love this piece. Very enjoyable. Simplistic, but has meaning and flows with each part. Does lack a little, but overall, very enjoyable. Well worth it.

Thank you, Brandon. It is meant to be simplistic, written for a mediocre high school orchestra (which happens to have an amazing concertmaster.)

the chord progression is around around and around , made it a bit boring ,

change it , may be it will better
