Yes, a typical fugue in the style of Buxtehude with lots of sequences (unfortunately a little too many).

A few points for the future.

You modulated to the dominant, which is good, but it was a little abrupt in getting there. I would suggest you give it another couple of bars to prepare yourself and even introduce a bar on the 2ndary dominant (in this case, Dmaj, the dominant of Gmaj/minor), thus setting up a grand entrance.

As I mentioned before, too many sequences methinks. Also, and I don't know it his was intentional, but there is always something going on. Maybe give a little longer est to the pedals or a hand, and maybe a little more contrast on the rhythm such as sustained pedal note in the pedals with quavers in left hand and minims in right, for example.

I didn't see any episodal entries (having the tune enter in canon-form), which is typical of that period and both Bach and Buxtehude. Also, when the pedals come in with the theme, it's in the high register and coupled with high register RH and LH, it loses that "pedal power" entry.

Generally, pretty good, don't get me wrong. A little fiendish to play, but aren't all fugues difficult to play? :P

Thank you Gugleimo!

Your commetens is allways and enlightment of the day my friend :D

I will encourage everyone who read this post the listen to the best contemporary classical muisc at : SoundClick artist: Guglielmo Esposito - Contemporary classical music, 18th and 19th century music, style like Mozart and Beethoven

Many Thanks

I think a midi file is the most essential & fundamental contribution where anyone can easily evaluate you work even if an mp3 is better quality.

Well you got both score and mp3, that shall do! :)

Not a bad fugue, but I agree with Zerillo- if you truly want it to sound "Bachian", some important aspects are missing in the development.

Also, if you truly "Draw a line after Mozart's death" you're missing out on some really great music.

Thanks :)

I would have to honestly say i like this better than any fuge by Bach.

hehe, thank you that is a big compliment, if that is ture you should listen to more bach fuges, there are the best :)

Can you recommend any then?

Ill give you some links :

Bach fugues.

YouTube - Ton Koopman and his Dancing Shoelaces little fugue in g minor

Toccata fugue d minor

the abosolute favorite, dorain fugue.

This is the great fugue in g minor

There are so many bach fugues, check the wtc ( piano/harpsichord music ) or Bach: Clavier ubing ( several books) (organs works). If you listen to the sacred works of bach there is a lot of fugal writing, bach IS counterpoint.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

Yeah I've heard all those ones before, but they're all really predictable. Yours is quite harmonically interesting. Maybe that just comes from me being not a huge fan of baroque music.

Your composition has certainly improved since last time I visited this site! I really enjoyed this piece. There are moments where it sounds a little odd and sections which were rather harmonically uninteresting, but overall the signs are good.

Danke! :)

Quite enjoyable fugue and lovely subject. Yes, one could argue there are little too many sequences but I think the amount of sequences is just enough - any more and I'd agree with a few prior posts. Also, not everyone who sets out to write a Fugue - albeit in the Baroque style - aims for Bach's form.

thank you!

I'm not sure I'm right, but shouldn't the comes (first answer) be in f minor if the subject starts with the dominant instead of the tonic?

  • Author

Does the subject start in the dominant? Dux shall be tonic, Comes shall be dominant

Look at the score, and you'll understand.. a theme in C minor can start with a G, or Eb
