Pursuit of Happiness - Final Scene

Featured Replies

Hey guys, this is my first post in a while.

This is a scene I scored from the pursuit of happiness.

It's the last scene where Will Smith lands the job he has been trying to get for 6 months.

I scored this scene using string orchestra, piano, and celeste.

Please let me know what you think.

(starts about 1:10 into the video)

Really well done. My main comment is that I feel that at around the 2:30 mark, when Will Smith enters the group of people walking, the full ensemble should have started there instead of the 10 or so seconds behind it.

Also, I thought dynamics could have been used more. It always seemed to be loud. I would have either started with only 1 or 2 instruments playing, or would have used a full orchestra at the end of the scene.

Again, these are just my opinons and feelings and the way I would have done it. The music showed a lot of consideration and thought, and really did convey the emotions of the matter well.

thanks for the compliment!

Actually in the very beginning there is only 1 violin 1 viola and a flute

I can definitely see your point about the dynamics, maybe my mixing could use some work.

As for the crowd- in the actual scene Will Smith has a voiceover where he says "this part of my life, this little part- is called happiness." Just as the statement ends, the music builds.

Beautiful music and such a beautiful film. You complimented the cue perfectly.

I must say, i agree, the dynamics really could have enhanced the gradual transition to climax. You seemed to just throw everything in the pot at once at about 2:22 (or blowing your load in one go as one of my teachers used to say lol). Still remaining somewhat subtle and delicate but really giving the viewer that wonderful sense of satisfaction as all those great composers seem to accomplish as the dynamics and 'fullness' shift, if that makes any sense.

I loved your harp glissando on the embracing child reveal-shot, those little subtitles really glue sequences like this together. Good job, i love your style!
