First Composition for piano

Featured Replies

Yep, this is my first composition I've ever made for piano. It's quite simple, consisting mainly of i and V chords in g minor. I'm just about finished taking music theory in high school, hopefully I can continue to composition next year at college. Hope you enjoy! :)

Can you make that into a MIDI file? I don't have the latest Finale.

Well done, especially for a first composition. I really enjoyed. Simple chords and structure aren't always a bad thing. Music doesn't have to be complicated to be fulfilling. The only thing I didn't understand was the title. The music doesn't really feel like Rigor Mortis. Maybe if the end was a little more dramatic, coming to a stop, reducing the rhythm? (Upon further investigation and listening, I would be happy with the title if mm. 9-11 were, at least the musical idea, were used at the end.) Only my humble opinon. Overall, well done, mate!

Thanks for the input. Yes, I agree about the title, you see at the time (last night at 12:30 am) I was trying to finish up yet I didn't have a title and my project was due today. In a rush I just put down the first thing that came to mind, rigor mortis. There really is no meaning behind it besides that. Your opinion is greatly valued. :)

I always post a midi, a pdf, and a nwc file because that's the program I use.

When I have it I always post the mp3 as well.

Unfortunately, I don't know how convert it to pdf or record a mp3, tips would be greatly appreciated.

The worst frickin notation program I've ever used.

Couldn't agree with you more, I only wish I had Sibelius 5.

Ok, well, first off, I imagine the 8th and 9th measure you mean to split up between the two hands. I always write one staff per hand, so I would split the lines up between the two. As it is written it makes me think of one hand playing the intervals, and that would be kind of ridiculous.

So, do you want me to have 2 trebles, and then switch to 1 treble and 1 bass? If that is what you mean, I would but...I think it is beyond finale notepad 2009 abilities, please correct me if I am wrong.

However, for what it is I like the ideas you have. There's plenty of movement, so it doesn't get too tiresome staying in one key.

You should keep working on this, expand it out, move into another key, etc.

If you don't, I will.

Thanks for the advice, you're right I should expand it, my excuse for not making too large was that I had to play it for my music theory class the next day, I'm only an amateur pianist. Your opinion is greatly valued, hopefully you will see a newer improved version in the future, and I'll try my best to fix the one hand issue you mentioned earlier. :)

I liked it.. It is really good for a first piano composition. I have some suggestions on a few minor details.

-The transition from the B section to the A section is a little awkward. You might want to put a V or 7 diminished chord there.

- Using inverted g minor chords give a weak ending to such a strong piece, I think it would sound more musical if you were to use a V chord before the final g minor chord. I think that the last measure should be scratched, it doesn't add anything to the piece.

It's your piece use your ear and do what you think sounds good, keep on writing!

I posted the original midi file (for those who dont have finale), and a mus. file so you can see the suggestions.

Wow, thanks Muzic!

I really appreciate the effort.

I'm still figuring out how to make a transitions from different sections, like you said the A to B phrases. Thanks for the advice! :)

Check out MuseScore | Free music composition & notation software

It is completely free open source program that outputs music in .mid .wav .flac .ogg formats as well as print scores out in .pdf .png .ps .svg formats.

You'll need to get soundfonts to have playback, but those you can get free. Check out http://www.musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfont for more information.

Granted, it is no Sibelius or Finale, but you can't complain about the price
