Hymn to Awakening Nights (Brass Quintet)

Featured Replies

Hi,

two days ago I wrote a small fanfare for brass quintet because of an friend of mine. She asked me "Hey, don't you want to write a little song for our brass quintet?" I think, it was a joke, but I wrote a little fanfare for them.

How do you think about this piece of music?

You might consider writing it in a more "brass friendly" key.

If your friend's brass quintet is not at a certain standard, they might not like playing in Db major, etc.

If you pick something like F major, it's easy for all the instruments: G major for the trumpets, C major for the horn, F major for the tuba and trombone.

By the way, just write "trombone" and "tuba". You don't need to add "in C".

If you upload audio, I'll have a proper look through it.

Here is a midi-rip with strings-sound. The brass sounds are just too bad :D

and it's strange, that some of the notes are not simultaneous, especially the last one. but that's an other problem. and there are no tempo changes in it.

The people playing in the brass quintett are all good musicians. most of them are going to attend university in the next years. so i don't think, that there's a problem with Db major.

Overall, a nice piece. I enjoy your harmonies, and the 16ths in the trumpets add an interesting flair to the chords. However, it doesn't have much of a melody, but it is rather short and fanfare-ish so a melody isn't really that important I suppose. It has a cool, suspenseful feel that I like without being overly gloomy.
