Cello Piece

Featured Replies

This is a simple piece I wrote intended for the cello. I considered calling it a "prelude", but, a prelude to what? =p It's one of the few things I've written for the sake of writing.

---EDIT---

I reworked the score, and I hope some one other than me can understand it. I also attempted to put together a trio. I decided to call it "The Sleepy Companion" based on a piano accompaniment I started on.

Recording sucks, but I already kinda told you that. Guitar 'cello, sorry to inform you. :w00t:

Looking aside from the score/part issues, it can be a pretty little piece if played with a bit of feeling to it. I've been messing around with it on my keyboard with a 'cello patch and a mod wheel - sounds a lot better. Yeah, you know you forgot the final bar line and time signature. Lemme just start at the beginning. The correct way to do this measure is to beam the first two notes, not three. When we see three notes beamed we assume three beamed notes = one beat. This is not the case with your piece, so beam two notes, leave the third eighth note flagged. Then your quarter, then a flagged (unbeamed) eighth note, then two beamed eighth notes. This makes it a bit more logical to read. HOWEVER, you want those first three eighth notes together as one smooth line, hence you beamed them. I suppose you could do this (I'm no expert), but it could still lead to some confusion.

Can't just put slurs anywhere. You have only two random slurs, but what they do is reverse the bowing. For each note a stringed instrument plays, the bow direction reverses unless they're playing a slur, whereas all the notes under the slur constitute only one change in direction. The ideal place to start is with a down bow on the down beat. By the second measure, just because the number of notes, we already have an up bow on a down beat. This is okay sometimes, but for this piece I would avoid it. Here's how I would bow everything:

I didn't mind writing that out because it's a short simple piece and I'm bored, don't worry.

I changed a few notes. You'll notice. I just thought they worked better, I think it was only one or two measures. Yes, I know, your piece, not mine... shuddup. :P Also, the rhythms you had on the 1st measure of the last line of music didn't fit into a 4/4 bar, so I did a little playing around. Those boring scale measures you had of straight eighths I juiced up by beaming and bowing them differently. Actually, I should have put the meter into 8/8 instead of 4/4 because the beat of this piece is NOT in 4/4. It's more like 3+3+2 (to my ear, at least), so that's why I kept the beaming as 3+3+2 throughout the whole thing.

You could have juiced up a few bits with double stops here and there, so I just put one at the end for good measure. I like the piece, I thought it was horrible when I first heard the recording and looked at the score, but when I fussed with it it really came out nicely. It's pretty - it seems sentimental, as if it could fit into a film or an RPG as incidental music. It's really capable of having an orchestral background to it, it yearns for that fullness. For something written for the sake of writing something - I say good work! Just work on that score writing bit.

nice piece indeed. Minor issue. When I hear your piece it seems like you have an harmony in mind. The b-theme for example: ms 11 after ms 10 is a little annoying if you dont hear a accompaniment like a piano, or some dubble-stops like James suggested.Since you write for cello-solo I think it would be more melodic. Or write a piano part. This would have the advantage to exploit your 8/8 (3+3+2) rhythm.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the comments. I should have put more time into scoring this, I'll admit. Now that it's been mentioned, it does indeed sound like 3,3,2. Anyhoo, I'll just stick to midi when providing audios, until get said instrument(s). I'll work on some accompaniment and see if I can't further develop the piece as well. Again, thanks. =)

i want to see the upload when you are ready :)
