Toccata and Fugue (E minor)

Hi, An organ piece i wrote, again, there are some examples of dissonance in here. i like chaos in music.

There's difference between disonnance and non-chordal harmonics. I'm sorry I keep harrassing you about this, although to make a piece easy to listen to, it needs to be harmonically sound. To properly describe your piece it sounds like a child bashing the piano. Though that's only in a chordal reference. The piece itself is good, although the chord and harmony choices are ear splitting.

An example is 0:09-0:14 and 0:28-0:38. It just doesn't work. There were more, although these were ones that'd prove my point. =d It's not dissonance. Some of it may be, although the huge amount used voids this term.

I suggest to read up on chord structures, and next time you compose a piece, while you're composing, list the chords you're going to use above the piece. This way, it'll always sound good.

Is this only toccata? Where is fugue?

Please shut your mouth, still your fingers, and listen to some music that's not from 200 years ago before you start bashing a perfectly accesible piece.

ANYWAY. I like it for the most part, although the rhythms are very "square" and on the beat throughout. After a while the lack of rhythmic variations starts to get monotonous.

The piece is called, really, The Ghost Ship, thats the whole idea i based this piece on, you were not to know this, however. (and to the man who said about the square rhythm) the firt six notes are supposed to be remniscent of a ships foghorn, The dissonance and dischord, which simply means a chord that doesn't sound right, are supposed to sound wrng and mak you uncomfortable, music isn't about magnolias and summer sun, this piece is dark and strange. Where motzart like to put people to sleep, Eric Whitacre, Stravinski and myself wat to wake people up and throw some strange noises ot there. and throwing the square rhythm as atiny little poof of smoke, i'm not annoyed at you, but try some Phillip Glass. but i'm sick of people that think music is about perfect harmony. Life isn't, and niether is my music.

Heres my answer. It isn't supposed to be.

Sorry, no offense intended but, Mozart didn't write music to put people to sleep... I don't understand how this could come from a composer of chaotic music, since in my opinion, a radical composer like you should be more open-minded and receptive. Good modern composers look up to composers from past periods and, as they develop music by introducing freedom and substituting elements which justified the pedantic reasons of 'outdated music', their chaotic pieces are still subjected to a controlling power of validity.

As for the title, how ever did the 'The Ghost Ship' make you think of 'Toccata and Fugue'? 'In e minor' implies that you should work in or around that key, therefore you should make sense of Hamilton's well-meaning suggestion and improve the piece, not merely to make it sound old-fashioned but to make it correct and coherent to the key.

I'm not a great pianist, but I feel that any one like myself can pull off a piece like this one from improvising, just that they don't want to. I do enjoy modern music irregardless of whether they are easy to listen to or not. Composers like Bartok and Stravinsky put a lot effort into writing such music and convincing people of their merits. Maybe you can help me understand this piece, beginning by show the score?

Well crap, Voce beat me to it. I think the dissonance is fine, and I agree that the rhythms are kind of square. Having less rhythmic activity is ok, but you just can't go I-V-I-V.... in the bass all the time. Varying up the bass line melodically alone will make this piece much more exciting.

Although I don't know what constitutes a Toccata, so...yeah.
