The Dark Side

Featured Replies

Listen To "The Dark Side"

This is a heavy rock song that was extracted straight from one of my imagination's stories. I have always imagined a far off land of adventure filled with both good and evil, which epically battle. This song is a synopsis of these adventures and battles. Musically, it takes influences from various hard rock and metal genres, as well as what came through me as a result of living in New England during Halloween.[/url]

erm...its good, but iv got some critique for you.

i liked the instrumentation..some cool sounding organs and pianos and that. but i think your melody could use a lot of work..the verses in particular. you use a whole tone scale or something that just does not work at all.

I noticed sometimes the lyrics dont quite fit into the line...so you end up rushing the words, squeezing them into a measure that is too small, sounds a bit funny.

Another thing on the lyrics, theyre far too explicit, try to make them a little more subtle or something...when you sing like that you sound like a child with an over active imagination! Try listening to something like Dream Theater's "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a memory" for a good example of what I'm talking about.

On the plus, good vocal harmonies and interesting word painting with the organ representing the "devil" and all that. Keep it up man,,keep rocking.

"does not work at all" ... I don't agree, cause that depends on your taste. People (like me) who are fond if non-diatonic scales will like it. That also counts for repetition in the melody: that can have either a hallucinating or a boring effect. You cannot make everybody happy all the times.

To add my own personal recommandation: after the last monumental organ solo there should better come nothing. A few teasing chords would leave the listener in a pleasant uneasy mood.

I am curious what sounds are sampled and what comes from real instruments. That guitar solo for instance.

I thought that this was a pretty good piece. Maybe a bit too wordy - too much to take in.

What lets it down for me is the limp vocals. They may be in tune, but for this sort of music they need to sound more gravelly and throaty, and this makes for a mismatch between the tune and the vocal performance that gives it a sort of "camp" pantomime quality - not what you intended I'm sure !

When listening to this song, I have sometimes thought that it may sound better ending after the organ. My original intention was to end in a similar mood as in the beginning in terms of instrumentation, though I see what you mean.

Guitars and piano are real. The Drums are sampled, though they are played using an electronic drum set Via MIDI. Everything else is sampled and played using an electronic keyboard Via MIDI

Thank you all for your suggestions and for thoroughly listening to this piece!

.......You are the master. *bows down before you.* I hope you realize that the coolness factor for this song is about 10 billion....literaly.

I think the mixing/recording could use some work though, and maybe a bit of improvement (more power) on the vocals. And like someone else mentioned, it sounds at times like the lyrics are awkwardly crammed into the measures.

Seriously though, this piece really is super cool. If you ever get the chance to play it live, DO IT!! and make sure the documentary crew is there to film it.

Not going to lie, when I read your description, I was expecting something cheesy and cheap. The intro probably needs a little work, it didn't really draw me in fast. However, once the core of the song came around, I was blown away. The lyrics were still pretty cheesy...but in a cheesily awesome way. So overall, best features were the piano/organ work (and the falsetto notes, those made me chuckle a bit in a good way.) I would also say that ending after the organ would probably be best, but overall, great piece!

Thank you all for the comments and feedback, I'm sorry that schoolwork has kept me from responding earlier. I will be entirely honest and say that I do have an overactive imagination :) so I would not be surprised if you find the lyrics to be cheesy. I'll be sure to keep all of the suggestions in mind

Ok...was that singing for real? If you get a singer this could be good. As it is, it sounds like the theme song for a kid's cartoon (which may have been what you were going for, I don't know).

Other than that, the guitar solo is mixed pretty low, I had to turn my volume up a lot to hear it.
