Two soundtracks for piano

Featured Replies

Hi, I wrote these two short and simple pieces, which are two of my very first works.

I think they can be soundtracks for anime/videogames, played by finale:

First: this is a kind of revised improvisation, the first complete piece I wrote, sounds quite dated to my ears today.

Second: in this piece I think there could be some mistakes with harmony, so if you find them let me know, thanks!

I can't insert dinamic because I'm having troubles with it and the sustain was played by foot, same problem.

I would like to know your opinion, in this period I'm composing other pieces, more mature and longer, which I like much more and I need to know if it is the right way, thank you.

Please post this in the 'Incidental music and Soundtracks' sub-forum. You will receive more appropriate criticism for this type of music.

I listened to the first piece. It has a nice, simple melody that is easy to follow. However, I have some critique. There are no dynamics at all, and I think it might sound better if you slowed the tempo down a bit. Also, in the left hand, all that is going is plain arpeggios throughout the whole thing. My advice would be to add some dynamic contrast, slow down the tempo a bit, and vary the left hand stylistically. Maybe throw in some block chords once in a while. The melody is pretty much the same throughout, but moved around in sequences. Try expanding the piece and giving it some new contrasting melodies and sections.

Thank you very much for your critiques and advices, I will need them in the future.

Yes, the first piece has absolutely need of dynamics, otherwise it would be to listen almost the same thing for 3 times, quite boring. Originally I played them, but when I try to insert them with finale this is what it happens, for example:

59->low

60->very high

There's something that I still can't understand.

About the fact to slow down the tempo: this piece originally was slower, but I decided to make it faster because it is so much simple and sounded quite thin! :D

I think that a better pianist than me would make it sound great also with slower tempo. But I will try.

Personally I don't like the first piece, it was just a nice try and I didn't want to erase it.

The second is better because I composed it with more intention, despite you would do the same observations.

Thank you again.

Other opinions are welcome, expecially on the 2nd piece, because it is my first true (again simple) composition for piano.

I'm writing a 3rd piece which should be a lot better (to me) and I want to avoid the same mistakes or knowing if it is a right way to compose soundtracks for piano, expecially for the ideas, because arranging needs to be developed (this means time and practice!)

Thanks.

AS much as some people will tell you that certain harmony's are "wrong", there really is no such thing as a wrong harmony.

Some people enjoy my music, while others think it is just noise.

The only person that can decide whether or not your harmony is right is you. The best way to get an ear for your music, is to compose often. Practice makes perfect.

Study all of the music that you like and even the music you dislike and in time you will find the sound you are looking for in any given piece.

You have used some notes in here that I wouldn't use in this style of work, but that does not mean it isn't the right way to do it.

If you can post a score, it might help some people to be more specific in what they like and dislike.

Hi, thank you for the reply.

It was the first time in which I tried to write something with chords and my fear was to insert "wrong notes" for the ears of common people, in fact these pieces can be considered something between a soundtrack and a pop piece.

I have posted a score of the Second piece, it's so simple, quite embarrasing. :blush:
