How to save a compressed file.

Featured Replies

I feel like I should know this, but how do you save an audio file from Finale to be under a MB. The smallest I can get it is 2 MB.

Well, it *could* be headers -- kinda like why Word documents can't be smaller than a certain amount.

But likely it's just that it's an audio file; they're big in general. A MIDI export would be lower, but obviously that's not an audio file. So long as you're using an mp3 or ogg, there's not much you can do. If you're using WAV/AIFF, switch to mp3.

It compresses to mp3, but it is still too large.

Do you have a Mac or PC?

Well, you can always reduce the quality - the question is just how far it makes sense to go. If you saved a 10 minute sound file as an mp3 with 8kbps and a sampling rate of 8000, it probably would be around 500 kB. But of course, it will sound like quite a different piece if you do that…

So really, the question is just how high the quality has to be.

how can i reduce the quality?

I have pc by the way.

Download an audio editing program, such as Audacity, open the file and save it again as an MP3.

If you use Audacity, you do this by going to the File menu, then Export. Under Format, choose MP3 (or OGG if you prefer), then click on options and choose your desired quality. The less your kbps is, the smaller will the file be, but the worse the compression quality. See if you can find an acceptable compromise.

Okay thanks. I will try later.
