Look out the window - floating toxins, unseasonal hurricanes, falling frogs, wrong temperature, wrong colour, jumbo jets and ufo's. What is it ? STRANGE SKY..............................

Strange_sky__B_.MID

I'm listening to this as I type, so if it's a bit random, then that's why. I like the string voicing. Listening to bass part at the moment - I like that too. I don't like so much the drums - they seem overbearing and a drummer wouldn't like that part because there is too much to read. Ditto the piano - it leaves very little to improvise over. Is that a honky-tonk-piano solo? Whatever it is, I like the style, but I don't like the fact that it's a written solo. Written solos in Jazz are an absolute no-no to me. I love the voicings of some of the chords in the Electric piano. Actually, I don't like some of the solo - where the strings come in especially - the arpeggios seem too simple for what has come before. Hmm, another written guitar solo. Ditto for the drum part about the guitar part.

Also, a random point, this is just my midi, but I don't like the strings with no vibrato - that annoys me somewhat.

Conclusion: This is a nice piece of light music. Sounds like something you'd hear playing at a shopping centre. Could do with a bit more of a melody. Nice written rhythm section parts, but rhythm section players wouldn't like them. No written solos T_T

I like it. Real complex rhythms on some parts. Wish i could compose like that >_

Is your thread title quoted from the Firefly main theme?

Why such a destructive sounding name for such a happy sounding piece?

I liked the piece, the only thing I can't get over is the topic name, why?

Well in defense of Mr. Jazz - I'd say the Drum part isn't meant to be read per se. Most any decent jazz/fusion drummer could listen to that and reproduce it without looking at a black dot. In fact, the whole peice is not so much notated for someone to read (with the exception of the strings maybe) as much as so that one can see what the musican (mr Jazz) is doing. For instance, the piano solo sounds like it was improvised real time into Finale - at least that's what I'm hearing.

I don't know how, but when I loaded this midi file into Finale, it loaded GPO instruments, fretless bass and all.

On to the critique:

I like the groove. It's pretty straight ahead once it gets going, although I'd pull down the faders on the claps, or use them more judiciously. I'm hearing them on 2 and 4 - maybe they're meant to be a snare. Nice changes - did I hear a Tri-tone substitution where the bass line decsends? Decent melodies - piano solo is lick oriented, which is OK if you like that sort of thing.

The voice leading in the strings is just a bit awkward at times. (I soloed them), and voiced a bit low - or maybe just a bit thickly orchestrated. How 'bout cello and viola instead of cello/cello?

I agree about the name - the tune's a bit too happy with all those major7th chords, and the groove too upbeat.

Like I was kinda saying - why notate in Finale music that would normally be notated with changes and a lead sheet?

Strange sky is an ok title imo. Unless burn the land, boil the sea is supposed to be the real title? That won't fit then

 BURN THE LAND!!! :D doo, doodoo doooooooo

 BOIL THE SEA!!! :P doo, doodoo doooooo

'Burn the land, boil the sea' is a lyric from the FIREFLY t.v. show theme. A great little song, incidentally.

The next line is ' You can't take the sky from me.... ', hence the connection to STRANGE SKY.
