My first Choral piece

Featured Replies

This is my first composition for a chorus. Feel free to leave any advice you want, because I strayed from my typical orchestra and concert band pieces to get some experience with vocals.

Please excuse the fact that it doesn't have words (yet) because I used Finale 2009 and it only has an "ahh" syllable.

Infinitum-Latin for Infinity.

Hope you enjoy it!

The general M.O. around here is to post a score (usually in PDF format) and a soundfile of some kind that anyone can listen to (yours is fine). The .mus/.sib files are bonus.

Once you post your piece in this fashion, you will get a lot more replies!

edit: sounds nice though

I will work on that for sure.

Thanks.

Wow this sounds really nice.

To me, there seems to be no real defined melody, but the effect you've created sounds really great.

Sounds really good, wish I had sheet music to look at so I can true I can get a real sense of what this piece would sound like with people singing.

Very nice your choral composition.

By the way, what soundfont did u use for "Infinitum". I've tried with vocals and it don't sound like that. any special soundfont for that? thanks

It seems as if my praise would be oxymoronic, but nonetheless, I should not deprive you of any honest opinions. Your piece fits the title almost perfectly within the constraints of tonality without excessive chromaticism, via the lack of a audible repeated/central theme. It gives the piece a sense of "endless" listlessness.

Your grasp of the tone palette is exemplary for a first time choral writer.

Can't comment further without a score tho. Good job anyway. :)

Nothing special, just the "Choir Ah" sound on Finale 2009.

I also use the plate setting with a little reverb to make it sound a little more full.

Here is the score.

Forgive me for taking so long. I just now figured out how to do all of this.

Very, very nice work! It really does feel like falling into a bottomless, yet strangely inviting, abyss... this piece is quite good, and it's doubly impressive that it's your first piece of this kind! ^_^

Serge-Thanks so much. I love hearing that I have stuck to my theme, in this case, infinity.

Vicent-No problem. My use of reverb is a little infamous at this point.

:)

So I would suggest using it sparingly.

I like your peice. It sounds good, and you have many Whitacresque places. Things that I would suggest:

-Have you actually gone in and individually looked at each part? It just seems that as a singer it might be slight tedious to sing in some parts. The overall sound is good, but maybe not always on the individual level.

-Putting this to music would be the next thing. One can not sing a whole song on aws (it would be very tedious.

But very good song, keep it coming. I like you also posted a "first choral peice" recently Check it out!

Well, you COULD...or maybe throw in some oohs to offset them? Hehehe...

Text is definitely the better way to go, though.
