christmas competition!

Featured Replies

hi everyone,

up here in MN, we've just had our first snowfall of the year.

anyway, since christmas is around the corner, i've decided to start a christmas competition (bet you didn't see that one coming :w00t:, jk!)

rules:

write an ORIGINAL piece capturing the holiday spirit. NO ARRANGMENTS OF TRADITIONAL SONGS PLEASE!

the song/composition must be at least 5 minutes long.

your submission must have at least one woodwind, one brass, one strings intrument, one keyboard, one plucked intrument, and one percussion instrument required (you can have more instruments than this, but no less.)

deadline - december 18th.

i will need three judges, first come first serve. the judges will be expected to give the score (x/100) for each piece by the 23rd of december. i will announce the winner on christmas eve after finding the average of the scores.

contestants:

beautifulnoise

impresario

musicfiend

jared

michael a. garman

norby

judges

tokkemon

happy composing!

I think I need to enter a competition, for my sake. Plus, who doesn't <3 Christmas?

Okay, here I go...

I shall judge.

Though I don't understand why no traditional songs are allowed. That's a major part of why pieces sound Christmassy.

Because he doesn't WANT there to be. Gosh. lol.

Don't worry, the december monthly competition is a "variations on Silent Night" competition. :D So, if you wanna arrange something, wait for that one.

Sweet! I'll probably try to give that one a shot.

Sounds like fun, though the probability of me actually composing it on time is unlikely. I'll say I enter anyways, just in case I am struck with inspiration or something like that.

I SHALL TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE! :D

because i want this competition to only have original pieces, no arrangments.

Ok. I think I join.

must the piece be written specifically for this competition?

either way count me in

no, it just has to have a christassy kind of sound. listen to variations on an old english carol (what child is this) to get an idea of the sound i want.

of course, your piece has to be original instead of an arrangment.

The percussion on Finale Notepad is worse of a joke than the rest of the program... Ugh. >.> I seriously need to upgrade.

what do you mean by a christmas piece?is there anything that i can listen to so that i know what to write??

try searching "variations on an english carol" (what child is this)

that gives kind of the sound i'm looking for, though your song needs to be original, not a variations.

I was struck with inspiration! I'm definitely in this competition!

beautifulnoise , i didnt find anything on what you told me to search . but ive listened to harry potter's soundtracks composed by john williams , and tell me if im right , we should compose something like harry's potter christmas song?

ok, yes, that also has the kind of style i'm looking for.

i will try to find a link to the "variations on an english carol" on youtube and post a link.

I'm out.

i'm sorry i wasn't able to find a professional orchestra performing it (though i know they do) but you should be able to get the idea from this.

i'm playing flute in this piece for my band's christmas concert :D

I've just started writing a Christmas piece right now for Soprano, Cello, and Piano. I'm getting it performed probably twice and recorded. I would really like to enter it in this competition, but I can't unless the rules change...but that's okay if you can't.
