Fantasia in a minor

Featured Replies

Hi y'all,

I just completed this piece for piano. It is for my piano fantasia competition (by the way, i still need three judges and the deadline will be halloween. i have already recieved two entries.)

Anyway, I would appreciate any constructive critisism, especially from my fellow pianists. The midi doesn't sound nearly as good as when actually played on the piano.

The first section is a gentle, cantible introduction. The second section is meant to be played in a fontana sort of style, flowing with a lot of arpeggios. the short third section is the only loud magestic part and is meant to be played in the "revolutionary etude" style. Then back to the B section and a short ending A echo.

I'm sorry that I don't have a pdf file here, but my pdf creator isn't working for some reason...I will add it when I figure it out.

What's the pedaling like for this piece?

first section: hold pedal for two measures, release, hold next two, etc.

second section: hold pedal for each arpeggio, release, hold for next arpeggio.

third section: pedal each two measures (during each long arpeggio).

I do like your piece. As soon as I download Finale on my laptop I'll check it out.

It's funny because I've written a Fantasia in A minor...lol. It changes keys several times though. If you would like to take a look: It's called The War of Fantasia (make sure you click on the first or second movt. of the piano piece and not the band arrangement unless you would like to listen) J.P. Dennis - Audio

My suggestions so far for your piece is to add a little more variety or rhythms, chords...you could try changing the key. Overall nice work though. You should get it recorded.

thank you!

i think i will extend the short C section and change the key (either to e minor or c major) i think that would give a nice effect.

also, i will post a recording of myself performing it when i get the chance (i don't have a way to get a high quality recording, but i will manage =))

here's the pdf.

also, i really like your piece j.p. =) especially the 2nd movement. beautiful.

Thank you. Let me know when you make some corrections and I'd love to sight read it during my practice sessions.

Just a few notational issues I noticed. I think it would be more clear if you used two layers instead of several sixteenth notes tied together. I also think you could notate the slur in the final measure a little better. Try keeping it between the cleffs and flipping it halfway through.

ok, i couldn't figure out how to fix that, but now i think i got it.

i didn't understand what the layers were for and was frustated with what you pointed out...

Very cool chord progression throughout. I'm not too sure about the C to C# part in measure 14 and 25. I'm sure your ears hear what's going on, but mine aren't. I kind of see where you're going with it, but I'm not sure that the message is relayed as well as it could. You know about the layering so I won't go there... Kudos for the tasteful and ... gaah I can't think of the word... I'll just say correct and "unforced".... accidentals within the piece. Oftentimes people just put them there without reason, but you really have a hold on when to use them to create colorful harmonies.

thank you, i figured it our improvising on the piano, it fits the hands nicely and was kind of a natural feeling chord progression. also, having played the piano for 7yrs or so, one of the things i think i do best is hearing what chords and accidentals to use. :)

i will check out the c to c# switch and see what i think... :hmmm:
