November 1, 200916 yr Hey guys, Here are the first two movements of my flute sonata. I'm currently working on a third however I am suffering from writer's block :( I may end up having the pastoral movement as a third movement and something else as a first. Critique is as always appreciated :) Apologies for the poor quality of the midi. Oscar Sonata for Flute and Piano.mid Sonata for Flute and Piano.pdf
November 1, 200916 yr This really looks very interesting. All the repeats gave the impression you used baroque forms to structure both movements. Maybe I like a bit more variation, although your harmonies are very interesting. I'm going to look more detailed into it, because I am intrigued by the Dirge. I hope you get out of the writersblock and continue this nice work. I have one remark. I felt the music stopped to much at ms 9 in the Dirge. Why not use the same rhithm in the piano right, as you did in ms 1? The gap is too big... Oh, and why 8/8 if you beam 4/4? Ok, good luck
November 1, 200916 yr Author Thanks for the critique, I had a neo-baroque kind style in mind whilst writing the piece so the repeats are intentional, however I agree with what you say about the repetition. I was hoping to contrast this in the final movement (I had sketches of a rondo-scherzo, although sadly I haven't written anything past the rondo). I'll take a look at the dirge bar you mentioned and sort it out - thank you I hadn't noticed the flow stopped  . As for the 8/8 time it was because the speed was so slow whilst playing the piece on the flute and the piano I really felt inclined to count every quaver rather than every crotchet... it's hard to describe; it's really because that's how it felt as I played it (originally it was 4/4). Thank you again for the feedback, Oscar
November 5, 200916 yr Author I have the material for a new first movement down now - it's going to be an andante movement probably in rondo form. This will mean some editing to the pastoral movement but this shouldn't take too long :) I will post when finished, Oscar
November 6, 200916 yr I really like what you've got so far. It sounds like you've got some really good ideas here, and, from what I can tell, they seem executed well. I'm looking forward to hearing the finished sonata!
November 10, 200916 yr Author Thank you for the feedback :) I'm hoping to have this finished by Christmas so will post the entire work on the forum when i'm done.
