Polonaise in Gb major

Featured Replies

Katrina, it's very cool! I have just a few comments.

Chronologically, the beginning. The RH chords sound pretty flat and uninteresting right now. This might be a fault of the midi, however since I can imagine them phrased better in real life. How do you play that part?

Secondly, you have some sections that are just the RH playing like the top of page 8. I'm not sure if it's adding anything to your piece. While it's good to break up the loud 8ves and runs with something quieter, we've already heard this material and thus it doesn't capture our attention as well. What are your thoughts on this section?

Lastly, your ending sounds a little bit out of place compared to the rest of your song? Why so suddenly simple and quiet?

Let me know,

-John

Yes, this is definitely a work still in progress. I'm still pretty new to this composing game...I'm still more of a pianist and writer. As for the ending, I honestly think it needs something...what, I don't know. I'll keep at it. Thanks!

I really like the stuff you do with the tuplets on page 7. There's lots of good rhythmic stuff going on throughout the piece. It's a very exciting to listen to.

I agree, the ending does need a little bit more. I'm not sure if this is helpful advice or not, but you could try building up to something loud and grand, rather than dying away. Maybe try modulating to a major chord or something.

Once your satisfied with it, I think this is a piece that would merit a live performance!

Thanks, Ice! I'll have a new ending up soon.

I like this very much, especially the melody that starts in measure 9. The tuplets on pages 7 and 8 are also very interesting. I'm looking forward for the new end.

I'm not sure if you intended to end the piece on the dominant (Bb) but I think Eb would be better.

Shouldn't the name be "Polonaise in Eb minor" instead of "Polonaise in Gb major"?

  • Author

Yes...it absolutely should be Eb min. You're right, I'll have to amend that!

I should have a new finale up soon. Thanks!

you are very good pianist, your Polish is formidable. This works very well developed, I congratulate you not only have nothing to suggest that the occasion to ask a sort of coda in the end

may be a series of descending octaves, ascending octaves can be taking as the initial theme in the left hand ..

but it is truly a good job, this is your first composition?

Hey, thank you! It's among my first compositions, yes, but not the very first. If you like, I have another one, "Duende", posted a couple threads down.

-Katrina

I'm very impressed.

Seeing as this is one of your first compositions for piano, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more from you.

Best of luck in your future compositions,

Wonderful piece of music, great and warm performance, would loved hear some melodic Adagio pppppp and aggressive-honorific Maestoso FFFFFFF parts, in term of rhythm its excellent, I feel some tango influence more then a polish dance rhythm but I'm not sure, and I guess its digital piano, it would sound better on a Steinway, again I'm not sure of my guess. The texture need some compositional retouch, all in all I did listen to it many time on the day didn't get bored yet :)

Gee, thanks! Yes, I have been listening to a lot of latin music lately, and this is certainly tango influenced, you're right!! For an even more direct latin piece, try listening to my piece "Duende for 2 pianos", which I definitely think is superior to the polonaise. It should be somewhere around here in the Piano Music Archive.
