It's not over...yet

Featured Replies

Short piece I made yesterday night and early this morning.

This was inspired by a video game situation actually, as well as listening to a lot of Hans Zimmer lately.

I tried to give the sense of... what is the word... hope I guess in writing this.

Don't think I was succesful with that however.

Anywho.

It's Not Over...Yet

Any feedback welcomed.

You should definitely throw in some reverb, it sounds like midi (or it is midi?).

Anyway, the composition is decent

It's the gpo instruments that came with Finale 2009.

I tried throwing in reverb by using audacity. Did not like how it sounded at all.

I likes it a lot. I could hear it on the big screen. Epic war preparation?

One question: I'd love to re-sequence your instruments so that they sound more live and acoustic, would you be up for that?

Regardless,

Good shizz

Coolcool. I was aiming for a war preparation-like feel to it. Tried to make it sound rather dark with some less dark moments in there, hopefully that worked.

@ the Quest; that would be pretty awesome. Yes, and thank you.

Thankyou for taking the time to listen!

I really like this. I don't use the GPO instruments with finale unless its chamber - the orchestral ones just don't sound that *realistic* to me, even though they are said to be. I hope you guys post the re-sequencing up!

They don't sound realistic at all to me the more I hear other peoples work. At first however, they sounded awesome.

And yes I hope so too!.

Thank you for taking the time to comment!

I liked it, you set the mood and it had some cool melodic qualities, which is cool to hear! It sounded quite militaristic haha, especially when there was just the trumpet and then snare.

  • Author

I am glad that I am getting the mood across pretty well. Has been something that I have been having difficulties doing lately. The goal was to make it sound militaristic. hopefully the next few compositions will have the militaristic style to them.

Thank you for taking the time to listen!

GPO (in Finale) can be made to sound very realistic in the right hands, but it takes a lot of practice to be able to do it. If you waqnt to hear some pieces done with Finale and GPO, PM me and I will send you to some places where some guys that I know have done some outstanding works.

I think I told you before that you can download Reaper for free and try it out and work with your Finale wav files there to get some reverb and other effects into your music.

Your music is proceeding along very nicely and once you are able to afford better samples and a DAW, you will in no time be presenting more "Finished" pieces.

Nice piece.

I did download Reaper. However, I have no clue how to use it so I need to start practicing with that too.

I plan on getting better samples by the summer of 2010 if possible, maybe sooner.

Thank you ^.^

Hi Wendall,

Nice piece here!! Overall, most of it was solid, but boy, I'd love to see this improved with better samples.....GPO in Finale really isn't too good for this sorta thing

Anyway, nice stuff, and I'd think it'd sound awesome with some better samples. I'd also liked a bit more stuff going on in between sections, like very low down strings.

Although you could wait until summer next year and stick with MIDI, I'd recommend that at least in the meantime, you try out freebies (Yes, I'm advocating free and open source again  ) For DAWs try LMMS for Windows/Linux and Ardour for Mac/Linux. You can also get some free samples, like I'm doing. Used correctly, you can make amazing stuff with them, like this one:

, which pwns GPO in my opinion. I'm using LMMS, the stuff used in Journey's End and other various freebies found from someplace and another

And BTW, you may want to know if you don't know already, that REAPER isn't free. After a 30day free trial, it's $50 for non-commercial, and $250 for full blown license. REAPER also has a steep learning curve for new users, and it isn't always too intuitive...

Carry on composing!!!

I'll try out some of the free programs then. I like what I hear in the youtube video you linked.

I'm pretty sure I have already used up the 30day trial, I could be wrong though.

Thank you!

You really need some new samples! It sounds too midi!

But hell, the music is what matters. The beginning was a bit weak, but then you brought some cool ideas that you SHOULD HAVE expanded. I think it would make the whole thing sound more consistent and not like a rhapsody of themes written in the same key.

If you really want it to sound like a Hans Zimmerish thing ,use some ethnic percussion or electronic sounds!

  • Author

Thank you! I'll work on expanding them then.

I wasn't aiming for a Hans Zimmerish feel but I am a fan of him.

At the beginning, I would have mistaked it for a battle theme song in a video game, good thing I didn't.

Overall it gave a Zimmerish' feel (forgive me for my use of adjectives o.o), only the quality of the midi kind of killed it (which is no fault of yours, hahaha... lol)

If the goal was a militaristic feel, it would depend on your point of view? (I would assume each nation has its own militaristic music ideals?)...

But yes, it definitely gave the military feel with the trumpet and snare once it picks up, and way to use something from HALO!!! (IT TOOK ME FIVE MINUTES TO REMEMBER WHERE THAT THEME WAS FROM WHEN I HEARD YOU USE IT!!!)

I just realized, it makes me think of a semi-Zimmer scoring Halo.

In fact, I say, mostly ignore the Zimmer.

It sounds like something from Halo!!!

  • Author

Halo was definitely a major influence.

Thankyou for taking the time to listen.
