A BIG XMAS THANK YOU TO CHOPIN

Recommended Posts

Thanks chopin, looks shiny ;)

I hope the time everybody needs to adjust is short and the community is active as it was when I first came here (a half year ago I think). Because I share a bit of SSC's fear. Maybe its the time of year. And so we're back at the original topic: a xmas thanks for chopin :D

Well like I said, I'll wait and see. Maybe it'll work out, maybe it won't.

And why is this thread in the music discussion subforum? Hur hur, someone move this to the site-related subforum.

Anyway, as for what AA is saying, I really think the problem is that, funny enough, there needs to be a more strict quality control over which discussions get encouraged and, by gods, using the stickies on discussions that are important/interesting for composers. Sure a lot of them are nonsense for one reason or another, but on occasion there have been really interesting threads. The fact is, I refrain from making them (the last one I made was on scientific literature concerning cognitive science findings on music(!), something which I would've put on a goddamn sticky considering how IMPORTANT stuff like that is) because they get pushed down by "how do i wrote for tuba?" or "whats ur favourite key???" threads, it's just a waste of my time to even try.

I've already written about this before, but it's the same issues as always that continue to be unaddressed. Honestly if the intent is really to try to fix these things I could as well volunteer and comb the forum for the most interesting composition-related discussions and compile them in a thread somewhere (which would effectively be the opposite of the loltastic threads thread) but really why should I bother? Does anyone REALLY care?

It's odd really because composers, out of all musicians, are supposed to be people who think a whole lot about music and should be studying and researching 100% of their time. Naturally meaningful discussions such as, say, talking about a specific composer/style or technique, or discussing more abstract things like education and scientific findings, are all things that should interest a composer by default. Unfortunately it's impossible to expect everyone to have a PhD or even proper education, but that's PRECISELY why encouragement from the mods are required (mods that DO have this education!) so that people who don't know actually learn something and to prevent threads with actual value to be bumped off by the latest LOLZ.

I mean this is what I would do in my lessons (without the discussions) but I'd touch on a lot of topics that I thought were relevant and I'd analyze music and give examples, actual discussions aren't too different either.

In short, if you don't show your appreciation for the good things and actively encourage them, then you'll get The Interwebs to fill up your forum with whatever random garbage comes up. That's been more or less the state of things so far, and really the results are obvious to anyone by now.
