Sopro da Noite

Featured Replies

"Sopro da Noite" was composed in June 2009 as an exercise of composition. It uses a modal language and a monophonic structure where there is a melody over a pedal note. His quiet and shady character symbolizes the cold breeze of a night (hence the name).

I love this!

It's the simplicity that really makes this very beautiful. The pauses between phrases makes the piece become much more dramatic. Then when you hit around 2:46 it surprised the hell out of me, but in a good way. Overall it had a constant mysterious feel and I could see the imagery quite well that you had mentioned. Good work, keep on composing! :)

Also, welcome to Young Composers, I don't think I've said that to you before. :)

Funny how exercises in composition can often be very pretty, and deep musically: reminds me of Philip Bach's Solfeggietto (spelling?), which was very similar to a vocal exercise, and sounded very haunting and cold, in a way, like looking outside a window at snow, in an abstract way. This is similar in imagery and tone, despite the different execution, and I like it a lot, and agree with Gamma on everything he said. Thanks for uploading, this was quite enjoyable!

This is excellent. I love the modality and the speed at which the piece unfolds. Perhaps it is because I was listening to it while gazing outside at the falling snow, but the way you treat silence is great and certainly heightens the effect.

It's very Satie to me.

Looking forward to hearing more of your work.

Thanks! This is the proposal: make the most musically possible with the minimum material.

That's definitely a worthy goal! Minimalism is a wonderful musical style, if used correctly ;)

But I'm not talking about minimalism. When I said "minimum material" I meant to use some material, but not necessarily to create minimalist music. The purpose of this would be the "force" to explore possibilities that do not usually explore. Learning to use every tool, we will have a much better result when we have all the tools available.

This limitation that the composer imposes himself is named "grid".
