The Fallen Gypsy's Dance

Featured Replies

This is a short tune thought of some time ago. It occurred to me as I watched a Tim Burton movie: I think it has that same vibe of a Tim Burton directed movie. Pleasant, yet strangely detached.Note: I know this isn't gypsy-sounding music, the name just seems to fit.The Fallen Gypsy's DanceThe Fallen Gypsy's Dance

Ok, so.. I will break this up by sections.

A: I like your theme. My biggest complaint on this, however, is your choice to have this in the harpsichord. Personally, I would've chosen to place this delicate them in the flute and double with the oboe - or vice versa. It's very delicate them and i'm not quite sure the harpsichord's soft tone would come out nicely with the celesta or the winds. Second: I don't quite see a need to change the key signature at bars 11 and 13. This just doesn't quite seem to make much sense to have the key change just for 2 bars then change again... use accidentals these measures!

B: Ok, the wind parts are completely odd. Are you planning on having 4 winds? I realize you don't intend this piece to be performed BUT I would rescore this to make it playable and realistic - just in case years down the road someone finds this and wants to realize this acoustically. I would recommend doing the chords in the celesta or harp. Then have the woodwinds accentuate the melody softly doubling the harpsichord. Would really bring that section to life in my opinion.

I do like the overall structure of the work. I think that was a perfect choice given your material. Good work overall! Thanks for posting!

I'll see what I can do about the wind parts: I don't want it to be completely unplayable. Thanks for the heads-up, because I don't know what's playable on instruments like that, and what's not.

Wow! This is really cool, especially that part where it speeds up and shoots into 3/4. This is the resulting sound when a Tim Burton film soundtrack collides with Frank Zappa at light speed.

Thank you for commenting, much appreciated! I'm not sure if I know anything by Frank Zappa (it could be that just the name doesn't ring a bell, I may have heard the music before), so I'll check that out :)

Not my favorite of your work Serge. I think that the endless arpeggios really begin to drag on even in the relatively short work. I agree that it needs some kind of color. The melody in the harpsichord for me doesn't work simply because it is the only more legato part and the harpsichord doesn't exactly play legato.

Hmmm...I'll consider that, Ben. I may add an over arcing instrument to give it some color.
