Going Coastal

Featured Replies

This one's just for fun. It's an arrangement for a large jazz combo and one of my earliest pieces (from 2004, I believe). First person to name the original title, composer, and where the music comes from gets bonus points.

Hey,

Nice tune - a fun latin romp with a great melody. I wonder about a few of the note choices, the melody could be hipped up a bit, but I really like the shape and phrasing of it.

Well done.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah the trumpet voicings and trombone rumblings need work (I can barely hear trombones on the recording) and the melody is very repetitive. I don't really have any intention of cleaning this up since I'd probably have to get permission to perform it in a public setting, but I thought I'd post it for fun (and as an uploading test for myself). I wrote it while in high school and high school students performed it. The arrangement's based on Nobuo Uematsu's Costa Del Sol theme from Final Fantasy VII.

Robin, are we allowed to post arrangements of jazz standards on the site? I figure this post's fine since it's a fan arrangement along the lines of what goes down at OC ReMix.

I didn't realize it was an arrangement of a game theme! I understand now why the melody was the way it was (that is not to say that the simplicity isn't a great thing - it is, some of the melodic note choices were a bit weak, but whatever!

Re: arrangements - I say go for it. For our intents and purposes it should be fine... If I can perform them in a club, you can lay your arrangements on us.

I love the use of percussion, the steady beats and not-so-random hits are fun, steady and keep the piece moving. Your melodies are smooth and fun, and sound great! Although they could be slightly spiced up for more attention as Robin said, less held notes and move moving fingers!

Your trumpets sound like they are having trouble, especially high blares in the saxophone melodies. I think the bass lines need to be more prominent. I can barely here the bari sax at all.

Yay, a tenor sax solo! I love them! Was this written or improved? I'm assuming the later, but I'll critique it anyways. Like most of the melodies, it was fun and great, but it could've been so much better if it was fast and furious, though I guess this song isn't really meant to be furious, so great song nonetheless. The same applies for the trumpet solo, and I like how you add in the melody halfway through the solos, yet they continue to play. I disliked how the trumpet solo sort of didn't finish. It sounded as though he couldn't hit a note and broke off and gave up.

So overall, great moving slow song, I'd enjoy playing it even if it wasn't fast like my favorite songs. Overall for the playing though was pretty bad, the trumpets were terrible, and I couldn't here the trombones/bari sax.

Thanks for the comments. Like I said, I posted this one just for fun (and particularly for the folks who have played Final Fantasty VII). I think this was the first time the band saw the piece, so it wasn't particularly polished, but it was fun to play!

Nice solid Latin. Claves would sound nice back there.

Very Good !

For the B, the trumpets have to 1 in the octave high, the other in the medium.

(Sorry from my bad English...)

The beginning is very laid back and chill; I like it!

On my first listen, I thought that the rim shot was a little too loud especially at the first section where it's just the saxophones.

You're piece needs more dynamic contrast, especially when the trumpets come in. It feels like too much of the same dynamic-wise.

Solos at 2:10 are equally chilled like the piece. I like the backgrounds at the end of each solo; very fitting.

Are you playing in this, Black Orpheus? If so, what instrument

Needs a different section or a key change between the end of the solos and 5:00. We've heard the same theme over and over again. The audience is fickle; they will get bored. I do appreciate the breakdown at 5:13 but there needs to be something crazier.

Nice track, Black Orpheus,

-John

Actually, yes. I'm on tenor sax and played the sax solo (that was me years ago in high school).

I totally agree, but it was repetitive in this case because I pulled very closely from the source (a looped game track). I didn't know much better back then anyway.

Nice job! It was safe, but it kept within the keys well and sounded pleasant.

Well Blackorpheus, you know better now ;)

Why not clean this piece up? It's a great starting point for something crazy cool.

Peace on Earth,

I don't want to critically review this... it was too much fun to listen to!

Although tell your lead trumpet to play with more confidence. As a trumpet player myself, I know that fortissimo is ALWAYS the right dynamic. Always. There is no such thing as mezzo-piano on trumpet.

haha just kidding. I realize how hard it is to play in tune up there at that dynamic.

Nice solos too.

The only advice i have is try to build up the solos even more. I applaud you guys for not just putting as many notes into a measure as you can, but try and build even more. It would add quite a bit to this.

When it first started, I seriously thought you had arranged "Oye como va." Ha ha.

The trumpets get NO sympathy from me. Any combo trumpet player worth half his salt will own a high B (which is all this goes up to, if I'm not mistaken). The volume was actually appropriate, they simply wouldn't stop fracking.

Nice section writing, Orpheus! Wish I coulda heard the...trombones? or whoever the tenor voices were, better.

The trumpet thing is very appropriate, but unfortunately not for the group you were writing for. Perhaps harmonies voiced downwards woulda worked in its stead. Though that would be a compromise, they're on the ideal notes.

Nice solo! Both solos kinda begged for some double time, though.

Oh, and I'm going to chalk up the not-having-clave to an issue of availability. ;) I'm sure you wanted one (right?). If not, I'm gonna have to dock a rating.
