'Junk Ballet' for Solo Flute

Featured Replies

this work has behind it the idea of a micro-ballet for junk puppets... these are puppets made from found objects.

'Junk Ballet' for Solo Flute

I think this could work well as a soundtrack/background music for something as you suggest in your description.

As a standalone work, it doesn't have much interest in terms of much for the listener to grasp. I would be interested in seeing the puppet show...

Again, Welcome to Young Composers. I agree with what Ben said above - this piece doesn't quite have the ability to stand alone based on purely musical reasons. It's meant as incidental music - though from listening, I can clearly tell that your more into the Avant Garde facets of music, yes? Very interesting - please upload the video of this! Thanks for sharing.

This is very interesting smile.gif This feedback. That you think it is not enough to stand alone. You think it has not enough going on? Not enough even for a solo flute? There is quite a bit of repetition I know also, does that bore you? Do you suggest more advanced instrumental technique or more extreme gestures? Not my style. I wonder now as with one of the preludes I put up here for solo piano, if it isn't too long for not enough interest.

This is not background music. It is no more incidental music than Debussy's solo flute piece, Syrinx. It is that level of imagery here - rather than incidental or program. I think structurally it is very cohesive. I also wonder if you arent being influenced by the performance and acoustics. When I heard it back it sounded a bit too airy and loose. The original conception was something more direct and tight. I like to hear more comments really cos I love to learn things and see other perspectives. J

Also... it sounds quite avant garde, I agree and actually that is not the intention entirely. This is actually rather simple, direct, rondo-esque music, also the score reveals this. I can't offer a score right now though. :ermm: soon I hope when I get Sibelius up and running again.

Thanks :)

Well, the overall cohesion of the movement is quite good - I agree. I think the problem here is that there is a lot of space within this piece that really takes away the overall aural cohesion of the piece. I don't tend to think of things in terms of classical or avant - garde. My music, for instance, is quite neo-classical BUT I approach my art from modern views and there are a lot of modern techniques used in my writing. I used the term avant-garde for this piece largely so that I have a basis for evaluation of it. Make sense?

OK sure... yeah there is a lot of space. You know I was listening to Morton Feldman at the time and had also this desire to be a bit 'provacative' or counterinutive by having lots of silences at the begining of the piece especially. This arguably takes form the continuity. I am not sure if aural choesion of this kind and this kind of Feldmanesque use of silence works at all together since Feldman of course wrote very different music. This is all great food for thought.

Also, and I know some people would freak at this, the piece sounded better in midi too cause the sound was so clear and cleanly articulated that the aural cohesion was more noticeable. Mayne lovely harmonic subtleties ironically are not noticeable in this flute performance. But then, I wrote for flute.

OK all good

J

I would like to see the puppet show, as I'm sure the music complements it quite nicely, but by itself...honestly, it's just flat-out boring, for almost the entire time  At least when the flute started around a minute and a half through (!!!), there was some actual interest generated, but since there was so much space, the overall feel is just...meh.

Thanks for sharing though ;)

um, actually i loved this. wasn't boring for a second.

i especially liked the harmonics (or it sounded like harmonics, i think) near the end.

He he ok thank you for the new comments. Totally boring - ouch. Not boring for a second ... Hugs.

Serge, the flute started a minute and half through? lol What, you don't like quiet music? I was intentionally writing Morton Feldman type quiet music - totally pared down little tiny gestures. If you listen from the perspective of a more traditional aspect I could see why. I don't think you will be listening to the hour long Feldman pieces or some of John Cage's longer work. :P It is counter-intuitive yes. It is radically unmusical in a way. I don't think this holds together as well as it could - I am not sure the piece is me but I disagree it is all boring.
