February 12, 201016 yr Author Alright, well I don't have the time. Sorry. And by that I mean there you go. *Merged double post...*
February 12, 201016 yr I think this piece got lost in itself. You have too many themes and too few motifs. Not to say that they weren't executed well, but it just that the themes go around the bush without any intent at making a statement. I've got a feeling that you use much more theoretical knowledge and not do enough listening. As the great ones always say, less is more. All that being said, it is of considerable length, and I can hear that you did put in the trouble to plan it all out and everything is just fine, in harmony etc... I just don't see enough artistic expression.
February 12, 201016 yr Author Actually it's meant to be a mindless freeform wandering, so I need to use a lot of different material. Also, I've had that progression at the end and needed to keep orchestrating it to find one that worked for it and I think this one is the best so far for that progression. I've done acoustic guitar ballads with it lol but this one is the coolest I thought. I needed something really stupid sounding leading into the second part of it so I used sort of a retarded marching band thing, because it needed to be scary. But I really like the harmony in the second part A LOT and the melody fits it well in this orchestration, but not so much if I wanted to make it a pop song.
February 12, 201016 yr I understand... you can sort of hear that in the piece, but you have got to be sure that you will succeed in letting the listeners know your intent. This can be achieved by the simplest of things... like giving descriptive names to your pieces. When asked "how do you go about composing", most of the popular composers answered with "its easy, I just find a really cool name for my piece".
February 12, 201016 yr Author Well yeah I didn't give the name any thought at all because I really didn't give the music any thought. I just think the second part sounds cool right now. I'll probably cut off the beginning and just save the second half as a better orchestrated version of that theme I've been wanting to write.
February 12, 201016 yr Alright, well I don't have the time. Sorry. Umm...why not? Why should we take time out of our lives to critique your pieces if you won't do the same? It's a matter of common courtesy man!

February 12, 201016 yr Notice that if you look at recently updated topics in this forum... I don't bother with such trivials. ..., I began commenting on them. February 12, 201016 yr BDW I want to thank you for joining in. As you can see it brought immediate results and will help you in many ways as a composer. Here in the Games Forum we not only look at a piece based on its composition, but also on its sound. The reverb you are using in this makes it sound as if we are out in the hallway trying to listen to the piece through closed doors. If that was your intent, then well done. Ron
February 12, 201016 yr Author Oh yeah, the reverb... I spent about 2 hours trying to download patches to be able to edit reverb in garritan, but apparently it won't work. I check forums everywhere online. If you could help me with this, I'd really appreciate it.
February 12, 201016 yr I assume you mean GPO not Garritan. GPO has reverb, but you cannot add reverb inside of GPO unless it is GPO's reverb or Kontact reverb if you are using the NI version. Once outside of GPO in whatever host (DAW) you are using, you can then add reverb in many ways depending on what program you are using to compose your stuff. So what programs are you using to compose with? Ron
February 17, 201016 yr :hmmm: Initial thoughts: I quite like this for orchestration, and it sounds brilliant for Finale. However, the main issue is the lack of structure. It sounds....well like it won't go anywhere, I get the feeling that there isn't much to look forward to after a while. But after a few listens: Hey, that's great. It doesn't seem as random as I thought. Although I still would recommend some more variety and the sense of *looking forward* All in all, good orchestration, medium for structure.
