Brawl Street USA (brass quintet)

a short brass quintet..

Brawl Street USA (brass quintet)

this is really good - you write for the instruments very well and I like the title. It has a growling brawl effect for sure. It kept me interested.. the move between the growlie bits and the choral-type parts. not convinced about the repeated extremely low notes towards the end altho it works formally it is a little weak. If your intention was exhaustion after the brawl then I would have a dying off glissando in trombone or something instead. This is good work. I like it. Great character.

Its a good work I have a few pointers one the brass are being used fairly basically there is a lot more stuff you could have done with the brass for example the trombone pedal notes if you had it muted gives it a whole new tone. Also lots of use of the lower register of the instruments but very little push of the higher registers so if you are looking at more works for a brass quintet keep that in mind because it lacks exploration at the moment.

I liked this a lot. A quick question about your intentions with the piece after 1:50-2:20, what I took to be the 'climax' of the piece. I really liked your departure from that bit right before 2:20. From there, the way I heard it, it seemed to build into those tone clustery low growls at the very end, which I liked. I thought those sounded like an unresolved, panting, steaming, animosity. Was it your intention to end it with that feeling, or something different?

thanks for the comments.

jaime: that was probably my subconscious intention. i might do that glissando now.

benlunn: i'm aware the brass is used fairly basically, as i was using basic brass samples. when i get this played i might add some mutes here or there.

maxunit: i love your interpretation, and i would say yes that is the feeling that I'm going for although never thought of it really.

again, thanks for the feedback, i really appreciate it.

I think this is a nice thematic work that would be really attractive for better high school players to have something neat to play in a chamber setting. This is a work that I think many would find appealing and I feel that you would have good luck in having this performed if you tried. I would have liked to hear more of an intensity though as I don't think the brawl was ever fully realized. It is a little too pretty for a brawl. The fighters sound like they might be walking out holding hands for a few seconds. I liked the low brass at the end though.

I thought that there was a lot of good tension through-out the piece, and that it really suited the name ;)

I like the sudden surges through-out the piece that sound sort of like the fight dies off, but then flares back up after a while.

I'm not crazy about how even the tone is though: even with the surges, it all sounds very controlled and restrained, in a way. It never really felt like it "cut loose" to me. I think that would have been a nice touch: to see things get REALLY out of control! :sith: :jedi:

Thanks for sharing, enjoyable work! :)
