May 27, 200620 yr Actually, Ravel's constant repetition in Boléro is used quite effectively and inteligently, done in a way that mesmerizes you Well, I am mesmerized by it...) I think you missed the point of what I was saying.
May 27, 200620 yr Interesting theme, but in essence it's just a bunch of broken chords. Add a melody line (I think a strings would sound good) and it's be pretty nice ambient music. Regarding the title, I think a creepier name would be more fitting. Love is generally considered a happy type thing. A little minor is okay as love has its downfalls, but unless it is a torturing love you'll mostly be happy through it, and I think the feel would be more major. There is a Twin Peaks song from Fire Walk With Me (I think that's the name of the CD!) that is very repetitive. It also stars with chime-like instruments but later on piano and bass strings carry on the eerieness with just enough variation to make it nice--but still ambient, not something you'd stick in your CD player and sit down to listen to, but have running during work or in the car or something. I'll post the name of that song later; I have no clue what that track is called.
May 28, 200620 yr Ok... this is not minimalism!!! Please. Let's give Steve Reich, Terry Riley, John Adams, Philip Glass, and even myself in certain instances some respect! This is repetition with a smidgen of (random) development. Minimalism is founded on the basis that the development is slow and constant, with usually different things going on at once, NOT just repetition of the same two chords. Look at Philip Glass's music. He constantly puts rhythms of 2 and 3 together, creating a mesh that constantly evolves, which is a lot like Steve Reich's idea of phasing. Material that is being repeated is imposed on each other to create more variances of each other, like John Adam's use of bimodality/bitonality. THAT'S interesting. NOT G to b, G to b, OH! b to Bflat! oh man what am I gonna do. I'm not judging the piece at all, I'm judging the people who think that it's minimalism. The piece wasn't that great, but if he gets something out of it, what do I know?
May 28, 200620 yr I suppose this song would make nice backround music if you're not focused on the music.
