April 10, 201015 yr Good performance overall - some intonation wobbles usually at the end of some of the phrases but nothing too serious. Ok, now to the composition. I was convinced entirely of the form and the static harmonies and drone nicely varied. Until the coda. The coda being a repeat of the canon derived from the opening melody sung in the opening voices. i enjoyed the earlier canon much more. Bringing it back in truncated version seemed to me more a matter of convenience - you had a service to write for found the piece was getting longish and chose to end it with a convenient solution. The problem is the coda lacks much variation and no subtle changes in coloring that haven't been heard before - why not bring back some of the higher tessituras we hear earlier in the very short solo passages in canon? Why not have a canon repeat the material allowing the counterpoint to create changes in colorings and serving as a lead to a short homophonic ending? Why not have the drones alternate between mens' and womens' voices while two solo voices present the melodic material? See how many ideas for an ending your piece suggests! So you may understand my disappointment with the coda. Overall, I like the form - a series of variations on the opening material which i find ingenious. You also know your choral writing as you know how to subtly change color without resorting to changes in color and density for the sake of business and novelty (something which I need to learn better myself!). I found enjoyable especially the 5/8, 9/8 rhythms and the harmonic minor runs. Envious that you have a good solid choir to sing your stuff - I look forward to exploring more of your works here or at you tube. Also thanks for posting the score. How did you do that?
April 10, 201015 yr Author Composerorganist, thank you for your long comment and ideas. You ask how did I do my "video score"? It's pretty simple. I am just took several print screens of my score, then in video program synchronize pictures with sound and export
