April 9, 201016 yr A little funky piece that I wrote one night. Nothing spectacular, I just attempted to make a really cool and solid groove to build a cool, downtownish horn melody on top of. Fonk dat!
April 12, 201016 yr It sure is FONKY. Good groove and solid playing ... I'm ashamed I can't tell if the solos are synthesized. They sound great (love the "Saturday Night Live"-style tenor solo)... tell me they're real. ... ANYWAY.... Fun chart, would be a blast to open up and blow on. Well done Franz! :thumbsup:
April 12, 201016 yr Author They aren't synthesized, they're real samples. I got some Trumpet and Tenor sample library with TONS of different solo-phrases that you can change key and scale ect. Just for fun. The horn melody is a VST synth though.

The horn melody is a VST synth though. You know what I mean ;) "Synthesized" ... i.e. "synthetic" ... i.e. Not played by real people. Which is kind-of depressing. Your samples and sequencing sounds really good, at least to my ears.
April 13, 201016 yr Author Well, they aren't synthetic either Recorded by real life jazz musicians and then sampled in a software that allows you to "auto-tune" and "time-place" the samples into different keys and tempos. It's a neat little gadget to use when you need a hip lick here and there. Thanks for the compliments though :happy: I have a cool jazz tune in the works that i'll record (sequence, i don't have any good mic/soundcard setup to record real instruments) soon when I have some time to spare.

So... the solos were performed...you just have a way to plop them into your tune? *gets it now* ... August 20, 201016 yr I can dig it. I have to agree with the solo sounds...they sound great. The beginning and the end recap sound like Earth Wind and Fire's In the Stone for a second...cool.

September 20, 201016 yr Hey Franz For a melody that is stated this many times, I find it boring to listen to the same arrangement. I would definately make it more dense for each statement or even for every phrase. The most interesting I hear is octave doubling. This EWF/Vince Mendoza style would like it to be more dense. I would fire the trumpet and alto saxophonist with these solos... (read: select some other phrases) All that aside - and skip this if you're just going to answer: "this is clearly not a demo for marketing purpose" again - I think there is room for great improvement if the drummer, organist and bass player agreed on the groove. The drummer is very swing 16th with accented beats where the bass player is leaning to the straight 16th side and the organ player is schizofrenic. This would also help the horn players in their swing, and more accurate phrases could be selected. After solos: Why not have tutti chords there? Little anticlimatic to have it fall down, before it actually does. The opening chords before the altered chord (and everywhere else they appear) are somewhat boring compared to the altered chord. I would make some kind of upper structured chords. Best, Thomas
