Tonal Fantasy

Featured Replies

I started composition on this piece a few days ago and was able to finish on a wave of inspiration. This is the most unique work I have ever created. I titled it "Tonal Fantasy" because I did not use any keys or atonal techniques when writing this piece, Its all straight from my brain. I used a loose form and chromaticism to try and give this piece shape and movement. I don't know whether it is beautiful or horrific. I showed it to some friends and they didn't like the sound, but I think that a discerning ear can find there is beauty in this piece. Please leave comments I always love feed back especially when trying something new. I hope you enjoy!

Tonal Fantasy

I find this piece to be quite beautiful. A few of the passages were a little harsh to my ear BUT I think that's more the rendering than the composition. I hope you'll continue on with this aesthetic... it sound's amazingly personal!

I especially liked the flute solo as of bar 64 onward which flows on the repetitive bars in the flute and the bassoon. It gave me a trill :-). Just had a bit a "thing" though this is personal with 77 onwards, the amounting to fff in 82 and then a very short ending ... but as said this is personal. Good worked, I like it a lot.

Thank you all for your nice comments!

Jawoodruff:

I am glad you like it, and found it to be beautiful :). Thanks for the feedback!

WolfgangSachs:

Thanks for listening and commenting! I wanted the end to be as abrupt and spontaneous as the beginning. Thank you again for the feedback!

atonal music to me is the hardest of music to write. so kudos first of all, still years from being able to do that well

Wow... I really like this. Definitely something I would put on to listen to. The start almost reminds me of John Cages Concerto For Prepared Piano.

Thanks for the feedback! :D

Wow thats quite the compliment! Thanks for the comment I really appreciate it!

I too like this :)

--The flute goes awful high at certain parts, and it does hurt the ears, but these parts are far and few between.

--There's a lot of movement in the piece when it gets going at a fast pace (and at this point, it's kind of like you're trying to escape from this world), but when you slow it down, I can tell it's not forced or obligatory. It's not like you're saying, "Wellll, now it's time for some contrast, *yawns*", because when you slow down, you make for these little details with the flute and oboe that sort of "flit" through the piece, like at measures 46-52. It's like being in an exotic place, where all sorts of strange little creatures and birds quickly flit around you, as you finally stop and see the bizarre world around you.

--In fact, the piece as a whole has a surreal, vivid dream-like feel to it, and the dream is simultaneously unsettling and magically beautiful. Neat  I think you may want to give it a stronger name than simply "Tonal Fantasy" :D

Thanks for sharing, this was very enjoyable! I'm going to give it a 9/10, personally

Thanks for the nice comments, I really appreciate it! The title does suck now that I think of it.. I might change it, but I probably couldn't think of anything better.

I think the title you've given this is perfect actually. It leaves it open AND doesn't tell the listener exactly what it is here. I second what I said earlier in my comments... this is a really strong piece.

I think that this is very beautiful; not in a normal aethestic way, but in the picture that I see when I listen to this. I'm not used to in-between pieces, so this really opened my eyes to new ideas besides the dichotomous tonality / atonality.

I give this a 10/10, this was a very interesting piece.

Thanks for the great comment :D. I am glad you enjoyed it, combining tonality and atonality is exactly what I was going for.

Johnbucket:

Wow thanks! I really appreciate it! Hopefully my writing will continue to progress.

I have missed this piece. But I think its quite good! Deserves a bump :)

I think the oboe is indeed somewhat strident indeed. The high F# in ms 19 is really high. I am not sure how it will sound. oboes get really thin, so I wonder if the written forte will be the actual result. I know that high E's and E flats are really hard. So I think ms 19 is really difficult, tricky...

Thanks for the bump/compliment!:D I'll take a second look at that oboe part and see what I can do with it.
