Fanfare for Band

Featured Replies

I had written a Fanfare for band about 2 years ago and since I haven't posted in a while i thought i should put it up. I didn't put it up at first bcus I am not particularly fond of this piece as I once was. (how many times do we feel like this!) I had no knowledge of theory or principles of voice leading or form back then, so when i composed i simply used my ear. Now adays, lets just say I have more tools on my composer belt since I have knowledge in these things. Anyways, It is titled Fanfare Grandioso. I hope you guys enjoy it!

This is actually really great, I enjoyed it. I'm kind of a band nut so I have an ear for stuff like this. It was tonal and thorough through out the whole thing, and it really sparkled, as all good fanfares should. If I would offer you any criticism, it would be to see about doing some editing and try to pass it off as a marching band piece. If you can do that, then you've got two ways to market this thing. Many band directors buy marching scores instead of writing them themselves, and the market is high for music like this on the marching field.

I would also suggest that you post this in the Orchestral Forum. Although it isn't stricyly orchestral, it is better suited as a Wind Ensemble composition. I'm not sure it stacks up against other pieces in the Major Works category.

pssst, timpani (not timpanee)

actually, I thoroughly enjoyed this piec. I know absolutely NOTHING about band music, so unfortunately I can't help with anything there.

however, it had a fun, quazi-western adventurous feel to it.

Did you write this on NoteWothy Composer?!

I found this song on the Scriptorium and I love it. I played the tenor sax part on my computer. Ha. I like your Utopia things, I tried arranging them for band, if you don't mind?

This was without a doubt a great fun piece. I have done a little composing for Band, so could you do one favour for me? Please, please, please put this in standard form! The Flutes should be at the top, then the oboes, followed by the Clarient choir, than the Bassoon. Then you have the Sax choir, and then the brass F. Horns, Trumpets, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Tympani, Percussion, and then String Bass if you include one. With your instruments all over th eplace in the MIDI file I snagge,d it mad eit awfully hard to judge the way you handle each instrument.

That said, I think you treat each of them as they are meant to be treated. Band music can be a ton of fun. And if you ar eeven half decent with it, you can ususalyl get some band somewhere to play it. This doesn't strike me as terribly difficult. A dedicated High School Band could handle the material you have here.

And I utterly adore those chords you have at the end. Great little transitions there. I'm adding this one to my queue of pieces I'll play again and again! It is fun, memorable, and quite easy to listen. Good for five minutes of just plain ol fun!

Wow, great piece! It's very fun and expressive, esp. around the middle. It sounds like the song for a news report- well, at least the theme does. Great work!

Vince, this is incredible. It's very unique in style and melody, and you've kept the flow constant. I love the textural things you're doing under the melody. You develop the themes very well, and it NEVER caused me to lose interest or wish it would end quicker. Quite the contrary. It's the perfect length and has a satisfying ending. It's not often I say this, but I can't find anything to pick on here! Bravo!

Heh, I thought you might like to know that your fanfare has been stuck in my head... and I'm not annoyed by it. The mark of a truly great piece.

Wow I loved this piece. It has a great energy and a classic band sound. :whistling: Wish I could say more, but I liked it.

Wow. Thanks guys. Im glad to see you like the fanfare. Here is a pdf of the score I think someone was asking me for it. I hope it works. Again many thanks.

gFanfare.pdf

yeah.. i'm impressed

and i know next to nothing about band music, but to me this sounds like any good piece of band music i've ever heard played. I especially liked your use of solo lines and occasional muted trumpets. It added a lot of individual flavor to the piece. I wrote a fanfare for orchestra once but compared to your piece it sounds rather monotonous :D. I'm thinking of putting it up in the orchestral forum sometime in the next few days. Check it out.

Not only would it make a great opener for a high school band concert or marching band performance, but any college or professional band would leap at the opportunity of performing something like this. No joke! I hope you keep writing band music far into the future. It's a genre that can always use more TLC. :)

Thank you, Vinz! That does look much better. I can see clerly how your orchestra colours and textures are moving now. Thank you again! I look forward to more of your work.
