Motley Quartet

A Motley Quartet for flute, two violins, and a cello. I wrote most of it while in class studying, and then built on the rest later. Its not atonal but it is very adventures in its harmony--not really bound by any standard rules or such. when composing I was just thinking about thoughts and how they build, so I tried to make the piece a little bit like the thought process. thus it has a few themes that are similar to other works, and is very seldom random.

I did not understand the music very much, even after listening to it twice. I see your method of composition - but unfortunately for me I didn't understand the music very much. Can you explain what you are trying to portray?

I was trying to portray how I perceived thoughts at the time, as building on each other yet changing, then coming back to the main idea then introducing a new familiar one. that is what I was trying to potray

I see your ideas here. A few comments, however.

First, it is ideal to keep your orchestration with the standard means. Instruments should be grouped by choir (so woodwinds, brass, strings, etc.). The clarinet part needs to be below the flute. I think you placed it there because you are using the lower registers of it more than the higher. It's an interesting piece, btw, I think you should write more of these! At first, when I saw Motley in the title.. I was thinking that you were quoting or arranging Motley Crue.

This is a lot of fun, Virtual Shock: things are adventurous here, while still being accessible and pretty easy to understand. With "different" harmonic language, it's good to establish common ground with the listener, and I feel that you accomplish that very well in the piece with the just-mildly atonal passages here that still have discernible structure and cohesion.
