Woodwinds and Strings: A Sontata II

Contemporay tonal: second movement

Woodwinds and Strings: A Sontata II

I really enjoyed the sparseness of texture; I felt that rests were really well used here--they helped me concentrate on the different combinations of timbres as they faded in and out. This exploration seems to be at the heart of this piece, and the lack of a clearly audible meter in much of the music helped me focus on this aspect further. I loved the harmonies, too--often elusive, they helped create a sense of motion/movement by never becoming rooted in one place for too long. Great piece!

Thanks for the comments. Appreciated. I was told that this movement is "bleak." Another comment was that I used C too often as a tonic centre. That's probably true: I find it hard to stay away from the Cm7 chord; it has such a mellow restful sound.
