Journey of a Hero

Featured Replies

Inspired largely by video game music, most notably the Legend of Zelda music, this was the first piece I composed with my new orchestral library.

I was aiming for a big, exciting sound, that conveyed an adventure/journey worthy of a hero. Hence the title :P

Enjoy! :)

Journey of a Hero

Man !!!. You're very talented. I enjoyed both of your works, "March of the peasants" and this one. Both of them are excellent. What kind of synth do you work with ? Is that an EMU Virtuoso 2000 or which one ? It has very nice sounds. They're not so realistic but they are pretty functional for a big bunch of works. Well done, friend. Keep up the excellent work.

hey , i liked your march of the peasants piece so i searched for some more of your work.

my favorite video gameis Zelda Ocarina of time . and i love what koji kondo did for the music of it

the piece is pretty good , i really liked it , but the problem is that im comparing it to koji's works. and honestly he did a better job hehe . although this is very good! specially at 1:48 when the melody thrives as the brass gives a good statement there . and the piece is very professional . at around 2:23 i hear sth from zelda isnt that right? hehe .

anyway great job ! keep it up :)

Sounds very cool!

You've really created a nice adventurous mood here. I like that the piece has a very light feeling even though it is quite densely orchestrated.

Please tell us what samples you use! There are certainly better ones out there, but what you get out of these here sounds pretty amazing, I think.

To answer the samples question which a couple of you asked about, I'm using the Kirk Hunter Orchestral Library (Diamond Package).

Thank you very much :) Yeah, I think the strings sound a little synthy, especially in this piece. I think I was able to get them to sound a little more realistic in some of my other pieces - I'll let you decide though :P

Thanks - I'm a little ashamed to say I've never played Ocarina of Time, but I have played the new-ish one Twilight Princess, and loved the music for that! And I've still listened to all the other music even though I haven't played the games :P so yeah, definitely got inspiration from there, but I can't quite match up to Koji yet haha. Glad you liked the brass at 1:48 - I remember me spending some time balancing the volumes and orchestration there, so I'm glad it pulled through.

Thank you! I think the biggest help to making it sound a little lighter was making sure the strings had a quick attack. I didn't want it to drag, so I think I used a mix of vivace and marcato strings

Welcome to YC, N!

Great piece! You definitely capture the Heroic feel and I can feel a lot of Legend of Zelda surging through this piece. It feels a little like Soul Calibur IV at times as well.

I enjoy the contrasting sections. It's not always just the main theme blasting in your face. Even when you bring back the B section around 1:00 and later at 1:31, you change it up. At 1:00, you add in some horn countermelodies. Any chance you could make these lines clearer/louder? They're interesting material that deserve a bit more attention.

The writing is pretty solid. I liked the clarinet (or was it English Horn?) that came in at 2:11. It was a nice colour to introduce. It could stand to be a bit louder so we can hear it better.

It's great writing, but I think the mix can stand to be improved. Your piece is very top-heavy and could use bit more lower sounds. You have some low brass and other instruments but they seem very quiet compared to the trumpets and strings that just cut through everything.

In terms of panning the instruments around, a YC member always recommends you imagine a virtual stage and pan the instruments to where they would be on the stage. If they're further back, turn them down a little. It seems more realistic that way.

Have you put any limiters on the track? That would be very handy so you could turn up the volume a bit more. The opening (and most of the track in general) is pretty quiet.

Solid work, N! I look forward to hearing more from you!

What a great piece! Your work just gave me some inspiration to keep composing. Anyways, you would love this composer I ran across while looking for teachers. His work is absolutely amazing.

Thanks! I think I could bring out the brass a bit more like you said, but I also kinda like how the strings stand out very clear over everything else for most of the piece, so I'm not sure if I would want to bring them out toooo much. I'll have to experiment with that a little more.

Yeah, panning is something I definitely have to work on in general I think. I should really get the layout of the orchestra memorized!

I did put limiters, which allowed me to bring the volume up from being even quieter! But maybe I can bring it up some more.

Glad my music can be a source of inspiration :) Thanks for the reference to that composer! I listened to a little so far, and like you said it's fantastic. Did you ever end up contacting him about the teaching he offers?
