A Message from the Review Staff

Featured Replies

YC's Review Staff is a team of members who operate throughout the upload forums to offer feedback to members on their works. We want to hear your music. We want to offer quality in our feedback so that when you upload your next work, you feel that your work is of a higher quality, that you've accomplished something.

It is important to note what the review system is here to do and what it is not here to do. First, the purpose of the review system:

  • To provide meaningful, informative, and constructive feedback. This offers a tremendous value to the community because of the small morsels of content that can make the difference to anyone reading the feedback on a given work. Members can take this information, whether directed at their piece or another, and use it in their own composition practice. With a growing membership of composers who continue participating on the site (listening, commenting, discussing, etc.), the overall quality of music on the site should grow as a result.

With that in mind, the review system is not here to:
  • Substitute member participation or feedback in the upload section of YC. In other words, the community and staff at YC generally expects that members who upload music to the site will contribute to the discussion and feedback of other works uploaded by other members. If you are a member who uploads music, leaves for a week, comes back, and expects to see lots of discussion about your work...chances are you will be disappointed. Members get out of YC what they put into it, and everybody wins when everybody participates.

Offer your opinion — good or bad. If you like it, tell the member why; if not, be constructive and descriptive with what didn't work for you. The review staff welcomes your Private Messages asking us for reviews of your work. We welcome your questions and will do our best to address them. But please take into consideration that we, as a community, expect members to participate in the upload forums if they use them.

We look forward to hearing your works, reading your feedback, and offering our own!

Happy Composing,

The Review Staff

NOTE: If you would like to become a member of the Review Staff, you can send a private message to AntiA or Marius, the Review System Leads, and make a request for consideration.

It's good to remind members of this from time to time.

We're all busy, and most of us are inclined to put our own agendas first; but from long experience, it really is true: you'll get out of this experience what you put into it.

I know I used to be a more active listener and reviewer, and I've fallen behind of late...so thanks for the reminder!

I've been trying to review pieces whenever I can. My problem is I try to look for pieces that no one has commented on, and too often than not those are the people who never return the favor.

That's a problem we're hoping to correct with this announcement as well as additional efforts. Thank you for contributing and we hope you'll continue to do so as we work through these issues.
