Colourful Battle

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

Here's a track for a strategy game. It's for the same medieval game as the Peasant Theme, but I went a lot lighter on the medieval this time around.

To me, this track is a musical combination of Mario Galaxy 2, Star Fox Assault, and Twilight Princess. In other words, it's fun and cheerful, but still action-packed!

Enjoy!

Wow!! Pretty cool piece John xD

I'm a big fan of the structure, orchestration in bang on, and yeah, awesome!! The only thing I'm a little jarred by the EQing and panning...everything seems really near, and the snare is a little wierd in my ears in particular. I really enjoeyed the mood you have created though - gave a real sense of adventure :)

The French horn seemed a little delayed at its first few notes. Same with the strings starting at 1:33 ... is that just me??

Anyway, I haven't listened many of your works recently, and this was a real pleasant superise, Great stuff, I clearly need to catch up *runs off to browse your previous compositions*!!! :D

what sampler is this? it sounds pretty damn good. love the winds

Nice to get such quick comments! Thanks guys!

Cheeselord

Oh, Cheeselord. Your ear is quite good for your age. Close maybe. I tried my darndest to position everything realistically so that the brass are a couple rows behind and strings are in front, etc. Perhaps it just comes off as too loud. Yeah, that snare is troubling. I think it sounds too dry compared to everything else which is just taking a shower in reverb. Perhaps I can add a touch of reverb, and just turn it down a little. Maybe I should I try a different sample of snare.

Glad you enjoyed the adventurous mood! When I talked about all inspirations such as Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, and Star Fox, I really was just naming solid adventure games. I was just in that kind of spirit.

For the french horn, you mean the trombones at 0:53? They sound pretty french horny though. They do sound slightly delayed. Not terribly so, but slightly, yes.

The strings at 1:33? You may be right. Their attack is kinda slow, so when I hit the note on the beat, it sounds a split second later.

I'm very glad that you were pleasantly surprised, Cheeselord! I try to impress :) I hope my other stuff sounds good too.

The winds were from Kontakt 2 and Logic's built-in sounds. They sound surprisingly good! I think it helps that they're positioned nicely in the mix. Makes them sound warmer that way.

Thanks again, guys.

hey John,

the panning really works well. Just do what you suggestet yourself with the snares, and the mix well be perfect^^ though I don't like your contrabass sample at all, it doesn't sound very reallistic imo. But maybe you did that on purpuse to add some kind of "computer game feel" ;) ?

Anyway the music itself is beautiful and makes me smile :)

The point at 1:30 where the strings come in is my favourite! Actually reminds me of the "Worms" title music a bit there, if you know that...

I'm glad I made you smile, Oli :)

The contrabass could sound better it's true. It wasn't that I was going for a computer gamey feel but more like because it was for a computer game, I thought I could get away with it :P

I'm glad you liked 1:30! That's when the build-up really starts to happen and where I focused a lot of my efforts.

Thanks for the comments, Oli!

Great piece! Good example of a "neutral" battle theme. I loved every bit of it. Just out of curiosity, how much/many years of experience have you had composing and producing?

  • Author

Why thank you, Delusional! I think it feels kinda neutral because there are more adventure elements to it than battle ideas.

Experience? I was doing a little bit way back in days like 7 years ago, but I kind of only picked up last October.

Glad you liked!

hey john , its very colorful as you said. i liked the brass section lines . it gave a groovy feeling for the piece . also as some of the guys told you , good job with panning the piece , it shows everything clearly and without clashing or being too far to the right or left ( great job ) hehe. very nice string melody towards the end.

Thanks, abd! Colour and lotsa melodic lines were bigs things in this track.

Also glad the panning worked out! It's so necessary when you have a dense track.

Thanks for the comment, abd!
