Homecoming - Clarinet & Strings

Featured Replies

This is a piece I wrote in a very traditional style over the course of about 2 days. I haven't very well revised it, but I should point out that the clarinet part, although in Bb, is not transposed in order to save confusion in the opening clarinet solo. This may be a little on the dull side for some people, but even if this does not go down well on here, I still consider it to be a high achievement for myself, as the sweet melodies and 'perfect sounding' harmonies in this piece are in vast contrast with the more dissonant atonal style I usually prefer writing in. So, please consider that I'm aware it sounds rather like BBC murder myster theme music when you listen. Any feedback you are willing to give would be greatly appreciated.

I like the basic theme, and I find the clarinet part well-written. Your string writing is very limited, though. You don't use any pizzicato, (which would be very appropriate to the atmosphere and style of the piece), and the ranges are all low-middle... a high string line in thirds in the violins would have been a fun moment :santa: . About the dullness, it sides with me as the kind of piece you'd listen to to empty your mind - bland, but in a good way. :Phones:

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, my string writing does need improvement, but I guess I have a fear of overusing pizz. just as one of those composers that overuses it to death... so there's very little (just in some of the cello part). I'm also not a fan of the timbre of the high violin, but that's probably just my ignorance and bad memories of high school orchestras.

Haha, high school orchestras can ruin just about anything... :santa:
