Symphonic Rhapsody

In this piece I tried to expand my musical vocabulary. In addition to less obvious harmonies, I also used some 5/4 and 5/8 time in somewhat large sections of the work, and I had never really used complex key signatures before. I also tried to use themes and motifs more economically. What do you think?

Wow, this is really cool!!! I can see how you tried to expand your musical vocabulary. This is awesome!!

I really liked the way you used the 8th notes in the background of the beginning section! It adds so much color, just an amazing touch of agitation and discord that brings the entire section to life. Your use of uncommon time signatures was genius as well, and I think I've learned a little bit about what writing for them can be like from this piece.

I could keep going, believe me. This is amazing.

I really enjoyed this. At times your material seemed a little repetitive and more focused on the harmony as opposed to melody.. but that's not entirely a bad thing. Very good work here!

jawoodruff, you are certainly right that my material was probably a bit repetitive and harmony-oriented. I mean, that was sort of what I was trying to accomplish, but maybe I went a bit too far in focusing on harmony and using themes and motifs economically. I guess I still haven't quite found that perfect balance yet. Thanks for commenting!
