Passacaglia Chromatique: "Raindrop"

Featured Replies

A small piece I composed about a year ago as a composition assignment.

Passacaglia Chromatique: "Raindrop"

Geat piece! Really lovely atmosphere without the more obvious and corny sounds one would easily associate with music depicting raindrops and water (like chopin's 15th prelude, ravel's jeu d'eaux and debussy's reflets... but also like the Bambi rain song, which is a little farfetched maybe but does give a good, if childish, auralisation of rain in music). So it didn't resembled any of those which I think is a good thing. It sounded very original to me. I have 2 things I have to comment upon though: it was too short (I want more ;)) and the second are the dynamics in the piece. As the uploaded file sounded was pretty much everything the song should sound like and that is why I disagree with your F/FF markings. In my opinion: mark Con Sordina in the beginning of the piece (and keep the 'con pedal' as well), and replace all the F and FF with MP and MF accordingly. Of course the performer will be free in choosing what loudness-level to actually play in, but I think it would convey this atmosphere you have set up much better without the extremes on the forte side. If you don't agree it is ok ;) maybe it will work very well, but I dont see it now. If so, do you have an more accurate recording?

Good job

Thank for you the kind words!

I completely agree with what you said about the mf and mp markings. I am definitely going to change them accordingly. I actually thought about doing it because I realized how loud it would get.

I can definitely see myself extending this piece, but not too much longer. Maybe another minute and a half to two minutes.

Well as far as this piece is concerned you don't have to extend it, but it wouldn't hurt either I think (eg give it a B section, and make it into ABA' form - this part being the A' part). Or you can write another (short) piece in this style, maybe with another image in mind? I mean this is very nice, but don't extend it for the sake of extending it ;)

It has been added to my favorites :D

David! You know I love this piece and I wanna play it! How do I add you as a friend on here????

Lovely! The only thing that I do not adore is the length and the ending :)

I agree wholeheartedly with John...this begs expansion, begs! That ground bass has legs! A real terrier in the left hand, and a sort-of syncopated, descending chromatic in the right? I'm in. MORE!

P.S.

For some reason, unless I'm told, I usually have trouble discerning passacaglias from chaconne's, with that ostinato stuff. I mean, I do intellectually understand the difference, as defined, but can never tell one from the other just by listening.

Even if Bach's famous violin piece (I actually play Brahm's study/transcription for left-handed piano) had been called "the Passacaglia," or even if you had called this the "Ciaconne Chromatique" (a cooler title, btw) I would accept it. Oh well...,
