Sonata in A Minor

A bit tame on the original side if I may be so rude to say it. How would you justify the opening arpeggios? (this is a genuine question, not an insult :happy: ). The piece, especially the first part, sounded very much to me like a Barcarolle instead of the kind of grandure often associated with a sonata - by which I am not only referring to beethoven or schubert etc, but even mozart and haydn, as well as the more modern sonatas by, say, prokofiev, have this grandure, this (at least spark of) greatness, which I found lacking here. I think you could have used the material of the first part to make a very satisfing Barcarolle or some similar mooded song (it is, of course, not a true barcarolle), but this did not really work for me. Hope you don't take this comment personally, because I am only referring to the music, not to you at any rate

I agree with royreintjes im afraid, a bit bland, overuse of chords i and V give the piece a predictable quality although i really liked bar 70-end, even if it lacked interest in the left hand. the changes are too sudden, like the lyrical section just halts at b32 and completely changes feel. I think a few bars building up to section transitions would be nice. And if youre comfortable writing chords i and V, do that, i felt some sections sounded "contemporary" not out of artistic necessity but out of the demands of modern music dogma. you dont "have" to compose dissonant music, and if you want to, dont spoil a donny piano bagatelle with it, you get my drift? ;)
