Melancholy Waltz

Here's one of my early attempts at symphonic composition. It was insipred by Shostakovich's Waltz from his Jazz Suite--mine is not at all jazzy, though, I was, rather, after some Slavic melancholy which I thought the F sharp minor would bring out adequately. I wrote it in Sibelius 3.0. All comments are welcome!

It's really nice, a clear-cut melody with good string backings. This sure is a pretty eerie sounding waltz, which I like. It kind of reminds me of the vampire ballroom scene in Van Helsing.

This song also has good progression, it seems to be both major and minor in the same time.

I'm impressed. Really well done song, certainly with the emotion you were thinking of. I could see it in many different scenes.

When those strings enter around 0:40, you can really hear the ballroom curtains rising and a swirling array of dancers twirling about. I enjoyed this piece, it was a pleasing listen.

I agree with an above comment in that this has a sound that would be befitting of a scene in a movie or video game.

You seem to have good handle on orchestration. The orchestration was suitably done, not many risks here. Furthermore, this didn't get monotonous nor did I feel like it was rambling either.
