Fantasy in Bb

Featured Replies

Alright! I started this back in June, wrote 37 measures (mm.21-57) in literally an hour, and then had hardcore writer's block until about a month ago. I'm pretty happy with this, the flow of it, the mainstream sound, the development of ideas in different ways. I've been trying to get out of the habit of creating a TON of themes floating around in a single piece, and I think this work accomlishes that. There are really only two motives (a descending scale, and three progression chords one after another). The three major thematic ideas derive directly from those motives.

Feedback as always appreciated. Update: I've uploaded a print-worthy score. Let me know of anything weird if you catch it! I tried to be as nice I could with the page turns in particular. And if anyone has some choice words for me about playability issues for piano, let me have it. I know everything here is POSSIBLE and not ridiculously difficult, but I'd rather not make too many people angry with things that could be easier.

Enjoy.

Overall, I like this. A few of your build ups however left a little to be desired. In particular, mm 89 - 100. I really liked that ending and though you were about to bring it down louder but then you just went back to the softer texture... i was not expecting that. Other than that, I didn't see a lot of development this piece at all. You seemed to repeat your ideas verbatim and then just maintained that same 8th note pattern throughout - interesting. That said I really do like this. Good work!

All I can say is wow. I am impress by the talent and finesse that this composition demonstrates. You've displayed how the piano should be used in music. The harmonic and melody were balance nicely. Nothing was left untouched. The ostintio was a nice touch. 10/10

There is something here that reminds me of a popsong with piano arrangement, but its kinda more that a popsong. a musical or something like that. because its not so simple in structure and progression.

its nice to listen to also. get that feeling ive just seen a movie i like and it has an happy ending, but still i get a little sad because its over and this song is in the credits :D

nice work! is this a musicprogram playing??

I agree with Tidemand -- there's a certain pop sound to it, (which is not a bad or good thing for me), but there's something more to it as well... :hmmm:

I like the heavy pedal use -- it fits with the "Fantasia" feel. Yet again, as with another piece I heard from you, there's this dream-like, surreal vibe to this piece I can't quite explain. It's like a happy acid trip -- there's very little focus on motif, really, despite the healthy repetition of the motifs, but more on creating a merry-sounding world. The repetition of the motifs is really too differently set before the listener to notice unless you're actively looking for it.

This is a good thing for the piece -- it gives a sense of exploration and development without unraveling into an uncohesive melting pot of random ideas

This is a really good work in my opinion -- thanks for sharing! :D

Thanks for the comments and kind words, guys! :) I spoke a little too freely calling what I did "development." To me, developing an idea can include repetition with new treatment (transposition, thicker or thinner texture, different registers, modulation, adding voices, layering, juxtaposition, etc). Not a 'proper' motivic development, I realize. But in my mind this is how it wanted to change and move.

Serge: I spent today working on the readability of the score. Just uploaded an updated score. I hope to have this performed soon, so it has to be print-worthy. Gonna go try printing it tomorrow.

Let me know of any score problems at this point.

Exemplary! I love all of the different builds and progressions, chords...it's just highly entertaining :)
