The Gate

Featured Replies

hey all , i know its been a long time since i commented or posted anythin , but i have been really busy in university and i couldnt find time to do anything! . anyway this piece describes a Gate to the dream world! i tried to make it , a little bit action , sci- fi with the electronic sounds , and adventurous , hopefully i managed to do it !

The Gate

This really reminds me of some of the later Myst soundtracks. It's got a great pulse to it, though I think the chord progression gets a little tiring after a while. Also I think it might benefit from a bit more variation in dynamics and instrumentation. Basically you've got a piece that starts softly, builds up constantly over time, and then ends softly. I would suggest mixing it up a little bit - introduce some different motifs for added contrast. Hopefully that makes sense. All in all, it's a pretty nice piece though. :)

No problem. It's a nice piece. I've got some stuff out here on YC, but a better place to listen would be out at my website, here.

Thanks, glad you like them. Actually the most music training I've had is highschool band and jazz piano lessons (also during highschool). The rest just comes from listening to a lot of soundtracks and lots of ear training I guess. :P Although I've always thought it would be awesome to compose professionally, the fear that my technical knowledge is miniscule at best has kept me from really pushing my music out there. Well, that and trying to build a full-time illustration career. :P Anyway, thanks again for listening!

hey abd,

nice direction you're going at here!

i really liked those violins at the beginning, i wished you could've had more time to develop this properly, it felt as you took the harmony and went on a different journey after the opening, which was good on its own. but not as the new thing, which i haven't heard in your pieces until now.

also, you went far too much with it, so it became repetitive after 1:30-change the harmony abit, go on a different pulse with the chords, change the scale, anything really would do, i know its annoying and tough, but as a listener my patience is cruel!! so always think about fighting those cruel people ;)

always interesting to hear, abd mate.

The J , thanks for your comment , i actually had some of the intro chords later on in the piece , but i didnt want to get the same feeling from it , so the orchestration gave another feeling to it ( i did use the basic chords , but i changed the 2 violin sections lines ) .

Man its a hough thing to change it alot , i tried my best in this piece , i tried to add arabian percussions , a harmonic minor interval ( which didnt appear alot( the guitar part)) . and more electronic lines . but i guess it got repetitive maybe hehe . anyway ill try my best in doing new things , and even if its hard , by time hopefully ill manage to do it properly .

Thanks again for the comment .

Hehe, lol at F sharp minor... you really wanted to hurt your fingers? :D

Anyway, I like the piece, it may need some more reverb on the orchestral side, and maybe another layer of instruments, it sounds a bit thin at times. That being said, I really like it musically, I especially liked the arpeggios in the violins, they really drive the piece forward. You could work a bit on the ending, but overall, pretty good one.

It's a tough scale on a piano... at least for me it is... lots of black keys xD

hopefully my upcoming pieces will have better orchestration and mixing .

hey abd, regarding this- i don't think your orchestration or mixing was it- maybe try play some soundtracks of famous movies that you like on piano, it will give you ideas on how one develop a motif, or how you go about changing things in the first.

the most common thing i noticed composers do is modulating the melody, or changing the chords over the same melody, that gives a whole spectrum of variations. of course the trick is to make it related, but sometimes we do things before we feel them.

hope it helps.

I really like how this one builds up, it's a pretty awesome piece. The guitars add even more effect with the violins. I think what I can see that needs a touch are the string work, but then, they're settle so it doesn't really take much away from things. Overall nice work here!
