epic hero theme-orchestral

Featured Replies

Nice feel to the style and melody and orchestration.

Rhythmically it was a bit insecure, and I felt the strings-based B section wasn't distinctive enough.

The ending kind of tails off, which I like, but I'm not 100% convinced by how it tails off.. Either make the ending really big, or really obviously quiet - not just the B section not finishing!

Anyway, good job - I hope you consider my points.

This would sound professional if the timing was fixed - like Daniel said, it sounds insecure. The A section is ok, but in the B section (0:38) it is difficult to tell where time is because it sounds like a mess of notes. This could be simply a issue with delay in the strings. Other than that, this sounds very good, I like the prominent hero-like themes throughout.

You realize the openning is Superman slightly reinvented. :P Made me smile.

The "timing" issue I think is a result of the relatively soft attack in the trumpet and tbone, it may just be your brass patches having that annoying swell in their HPlayback. The polyrhythm of the melody sounds like it's out of time when there isn't a solid, aggressive attack on the front of the rhythm. I actually like the polyrhythm, but again, the articulation has to be right otherwise it sounds like an insecure tempo. The issue kinda continues on into the second B section, you may want to completely switch over styles into legato rather than try to maintain the separate, harder articulation going during it.

Cool stuff. :) Thanks for sharing!

J!

Awesome, awesome theme. It's already stuck in my head. I love the hits you have, great placement. It doesnt have quite that 'big' sound, maybe more instruments(?) if you are going for that, but actually, it really works well for what it is.

Going into the B section was very well done, nice use of cymbals and timp roll. Its a really beautiful section, and works well with the piece, but some of the mixing makes it tough to hear the notes. Maybe a delay on the strings? Try some different samples maybe.

Nice transition back to the A section. Ending is fantastic, mixing the A and B together (at least as for as instruments). Very elegant.

Great job J!

Hi J,

Really nice piece, make me smile:)

I felt some insecurity in your partitions too....it doesn't flow at 100% (Section A)

Maybe youre a bit too much on times? You could redo each instruments live without a click...maybe it would remove the insecure feeling.

Beside that, your breakdown is really nice, but the mix could benefit of some clarity.

Good job mate, I have your song in my head now haha!

Hey J. Good to see you posting again. Speaking of which, I should probs do the same :D

Anyway, onto your piece: This reminded me very much of the legendary Magnificent Seven soundtrack. Which is a good thing in my book. I liked the themes and harmonies and how it was put together, but there is something missing. I think the sound is a bit flat, it doesn't really have that huge orchestral impact. Not really sure is it the mixing or the orchestration, but something is missing. Sorry I can't be of more help.

hey guys, thank you all for your great feedback and i'm glad you all liked it, i felt it proper to fix this piece, give it more of the respect she might deserve: i've worked on it a few more hours to fix timing and buffed up brass(i didn't use any french horns at all before! missed it duh), also added woodwinds to the B section/timing etc. i liked the ending as is /i didn't come up with anything more appropriate  .

peter_w, no kidding :) even the great JW is a thief on its own taking for aaron coopland, and many others, so everyone steals, and i do it for practice and not profit even(yey? :hmmm: ) )

Hey J,

I think he means you should and could come up with a somewhat more original theme. I mean, now you have sort of the rhythm of superman, which isn't wrong if you make an entirely different melody. But you didn't really :P. Anyhow, I think I have to agree with that, although I still like it as a whole. Next time, take some more time at the drawing table. I guess it's been a good exercise, though. :)

Kind regards,

Hugo

as i said just above you "i know, i don't care its for the exercise :P", seriously though-my goal was to get a realistic feel rather than get a solid composition-alot of composers do that to practice.

Hey, you fixed the trumpet delay! Nice.

I have to ask: do you notice ALL of your brass synths being consistently slightly behind the beat on their attacks?? The beginning is where I noticed it, it's to the point where it sounds like the rhythm is fighting to be in triple meter. I could be mistaken...but I don't think so.

If you want to compose more realistic, get the EWQL sounds IMO.

peter, yes i hear it too it's not only you.

Jig, that was all in EWQLSO so it's an epic fail for me.
