Finale 2009 - Percussion Mapping

Featured Replies

so like most people in the world I have issues with percussion mapping.

Lets do a hypothetical scenario and see if anyone can help with this:

say i'm doing a percussion 2 staff that has tambourine, shaker, and ride cymbal. in Treble Clef I want the following: Ride Cym - Top line F, Shaker bottom line E, and tambourine on the middle line B. I want X's for the ride cymbal head, and regular note heads for the shaker and tamb. (which I know how to do for the most part). But most importantly I want it to look and SOUND right. suggestions???

Thanks everyone :)

Look AND sound right? Hahahahaha.

Here's what you do: Click on the Staff Tool. Right click on the little box that appears above the clef of the percussion staff. Choose Edit Staff Attributes. The Notation Style should be set to Percussion; click on the "Select..." button next to it. In the Percussion Layout Selection dialogue box make sure Percussion is highlighted then hit "Edit..." It's in here where all the magic happens.

You have to define the line on which a sound/instrument occurs before Finale will let you place it on the staff (unless it's predefined). You can change the placement of current sounds, or click the + button to add a new percussion sound. If you want x noteheads, use the following values:

Closed Notehead: x

Half Notehead: X

Whole Notehead: X

Double-Whole Notehead: X

You can change the actual sound for playbackback by changing the Note Type.

The system is anything but intuitive, like most Finale features, but it is powerful. Hopefully what I said made sense and you can make some progress.

Look AND sound right?

You just made my day. :P
