January 2011 Competition!!

Featured Replies

Announcing:

January 2011 YC Competition!

Prompt:

Compose a work of any length for any musical forces.

Parameters:

Utilize as your primary material a quote of a recognizable melody or tune. Can be as simple as Mary Had a Little Lamb or as involved as all of I've Got Rhythm. You may and are encouraged to reinterpret the quote as you feel inspired to, but the essential material must be completely recognizeable and true to the source. What I mean by "true to the source" is that people may recognize the rhythm of "Jingle Bells;" but without contour, the material is not really "Jingle Bells." As you can see from the score chart, though, being true isn't as important as writing a good piece of music. ;) But there you are.

Finally, please choose an actual melody (or at least a good phrase of it), not a motif, as your source material. For example, the first four notes of Beethoven's 5th would be recognizable, but not substantive. At that point you'd basically be composing almost from scratch.

To enter, you must submit a readable PDF score and an mp3 file.

The following chart will be used when judging-

Creativiy: (out of 10)

Trueness: (out of 5)

Musicality: (out of 10)

Neatness: (out of 10)

Personal appreciation: (out of 15)

Judges: TBD by forum moderator

Participants:

1. TheWannabeChopin

2. RCampomas

3. JaredTC

This will sound stupid, but where will I post my work when it's done? I mean, will there be a special forum to post them to, or... *noob*

You can either upload them to the YC network, attach them to a post here, or upload them to a document hosting site of your choice. It really doesn't matter. Just make sure there's a link to your stuff on this thread. :)

Hmmm... I could be lazy and just bump my jazz variation to the first page of the piano forum... :santa:

Do you need any more judges?

Is the deadline that last day of the month?

And does it have to be a recognizable melody or can it be like a Gregorian chant that probably no one here has heard?

Do you put the original in at any point or just recognisable to the source?

I think I'll make the executive decision and say it's up to you. :)

Why not. :P T&V is a simple way to execute a composition within the OP parameters. Albeit not that creative.

Erm. I'm not sure how the judging situation is gonna work out. So I'll tenatively say yes.

Yeah.

I ain't gonna be a stickler, though. If you're honestly running a day or two late, just let us know to wait just a bit on the judging and results. I'll give this thread a huge bump every week or so till the end of the month.

But I'm not gonna hunt people down or give ten thousand reminders next month to get them in. Just do it.

Does it have to be recognizable?

Yes. That's the essense of the competition.

If you really want to use a Gregorian chant, you could pick a famous one like the Dies Irae.

Also

Y'all let me know if you're in!!! :phones:

Why not? ;) It's a fun ditty.

Welcome to YC. I hope you find it pleasant and helpful.

Which you will. Unless you go to Off-topic. Then it's neither. But it's fun. :P

Do you mind if I join this competition?

Sorry about the late addition I only just found and joined this site and have the perfect composition for this challenge. :)

I did my own version of the Wolf Blass(Australian Wine) Advert 'Silk Glove'. See the original below, the theme is towards the end of it.

Not at all! :phones:

Awaiting a straggler or two. :) Judging to be forthcoming shortly.

Sorry, guys. I've gotta quit.

This is pitiful, but right now I have no options.

I'll post mine when I get done in a few days.

Good luck to the actual competitors.
