french overture for piano

french overture for piano, with a quite virtuoso fugue, hope you like it

ouverture a la francaise pour piano

Interesting piece! I think you have some very good ideas flowing throughout. Here are some friendly criticisms, however:

Some of your chord progressions didn't seem quite satisfactory, such as the chords in mm. 8 and 11. You might want to open up the chords in the left hand a bit, since they could sound somewhat muddy, especially in the lower range.

The fugue was wonderfully virtuosic and impressive! I did think that some of the harmonic progressions seemed a little awkward, but these could be fixed easily. The episode(sequence) at measure 63 seemed just a little too long. One of these repetitions could be removed, I think. Overall, I thought the fugue was a little too lengthy. But otherwise, great job! Keep up the good work. :)

I'd like to give my general opinion here, rather than nitpick about this or that technical matter; I'll leave that to the pianists among us.

What I found off-putting, mostly, was that the imitative section (I wouldn't classify it as a fugue per se) was too much of a display of rapidity than a piece of music; I heard a lot of 16th notes without any consistency, or added interest, for that matter. I would suggest trying to use the 16th notes as part of a more homophonic texture, that is, use them as accompaniement for a melody in the opposite hand - only one of many possibilities to add interest to what I found a relatively dull piece. The concept and speed aren't necessarily bad, but they need other developed elements of harmony and melody to make them much more pleasing to the ear than mere technical exercises.

Celloman:thanks a bunch!when you say the chords in the left hand has to be opened up do you mean to delete a few notes or to spread the notes? yeah i think some harmonic solutions can be rework a bit,in the dotted section and the fugue, not to sure about the episode in measure 63 i think it work ok that way,i know its a bit long but it was a challenge for myself to make a quite big fugue,it was self imposed hehe thanks for listening and for the review!

paranoid freak; First its a fugue i really dont know why you say its not,(subject, countersubject, subsequent entries, episodes, modulations)id like to hear your definition of fugue,it might be a bit limited cause this is a fugue! first you say its not a fugue and then you talk about accompagnement and homophonic texture?!!theres no such thing as accompagnement in a fugue.it would be more accurate to talk about counterpoint than accompagnement but maybe thats waht you meant...anyway im pretty sad you did not like it,i mean i did thought that it could be qualified of too long,a bit imprecise in harmony, sometime in counterpoint but DULL...damn im sad about that. The theme is not dull at all im sure of that and countersubject is pretty good too,the development is not perfect but dull....damn im sad...anyway thanks for listening.

I find this piece to be very fascinating, personally. This would be absolutely hypnotic to see it played. On a technical side, literally the only thing in the piece that seemed unreasonably difficult was at measure 54 with the trill on the whole note B natural. With the other notes, I can't think of a possible fingering for that -- but that's the only thing.

From a musical standpoint, I love the musical breakdown into the 40th measure -- that's where things get really good. I can't explain it, but there's really something very trippy about the way you explore the scales and runs here. I think it's just done in a very unusual way, but also in a good way :)

Very nice job! I really enjoyed this piece

Thanks a lot!it s great to have a pianist point of view of the technical difficulties!.about measure 54 is it because of the F crossing over the B?is it not possible to get the quarter notes of beat 2 and 3 with left hand continue the trill and hitting the F with right hand little finger or something?

The thing is, that with trills you can have multiple fingers doing the actual trill, but only two at a time, obviously -- you can use your thumb and index together, your middle and index finger together, etc. The way you have it written, any fingering makes it impossible to either reach the lower notes or the higher notes well, without making the trill sound awful. You have notes below the trilled note, so it cannot be the thumb and index used. You'd have to use maybe your 3rd and 4th, but then you couldn't reach the high F while keeping the trill steady.

If you're insistent on the trill being there, I strongly suggest simply putting that high F down an octave, and problem solved :)

Sorry if my criticisms offended you, don't take it personally - it's the music, not you that I dislike  . What I was trying to say was that you had a texture that was very close to a homophonic one - there were a lot of moments where one voice was rhythmically active while the others had longer note values. It's a texture I found uninteresting.
