Nocturne

Featured Replies

My first atonal piece for solo guitar!

Please tell me what you think (I'll be surprised if anyone actually likes it).

Sorry about the recording quality - it's rather poor and I also made some little mistakes.

Nocturne

Far from being bad at all, this is a VERY good piece! As you can probably tell, I liked it a fair bit :D . You used a lot of different techniques for the guitar, and you managed to explore all of the instrument's range, without having the piece sound too cluttered or "artificial". You created some very pleasant atmospheres! I don't have anything bad to say about your piece, it struck me as beautiful. Your recording isn't bad at all, either!

I didn't think there was anything wrong with the recording. It was well interpreted and also made clear the effect of the extended techniques to non-guitarists.

A few things: At 32, I don't think 'senza tempo' is a helpful marking to put - what does 'without tempo' mean? 'Rubato' or 'senza misura' would be less ambiguous. Also make clear at which bar this is no longer in force.

I longed for some kind of longer phrases in this. There were many carefully written gestures and variety of texture, but the music was fragmentary for too much of its length. It could really be expanded into a longer composition where the fragments you have are allowed to develop.

I really liked this. I only wonder what exaclty do you mean by atonal? There was a lot of "A", which sounded as the Tonic, the opening triad (F Ab E) often functions as the dominant (end of ms 15 for example). So can you tell us a bit more you you constructed your set of notes?

Oh, and the 7/32+7/32 measure key. I would rephrase that. Or free meter, (without signature) or two septuplets. This looks a bit awkward and does not seem functional to me...

Well, the idea was actually to make a piece that is only made of fragments, hence the short phrases.

The A and the F-Ab-E triad are some key elements in the piece, but I don't know if the A can be considered the tonic. There are of course some passages that are not atonal (especially the A major arpeggios), but after all, if one hears it, the reaction probably won't be "this is the end of the piece/phrase". Besides, isn't a dominant defined as the chord built on the fifth note of a scale (in a piece written in A it would be an E major chord)? F-Ab-E however, is a synthetic chord.

surely the dominant is a 5th higher. I meant it functions like the 5th: it anticipates to the more grounded-feeling A chord.

Are you kidding? I think this is great! There's no need to play down your art. I like that you test out a number of techniques efficiently in a short amount of time. I agree with siwi that "senza misura" would make more sense than "senza tempo." Why do many of your note stems not follow traditional rules? Is it because you intend for spots like measure 19 to have a note held over from the previous measure (like the low A in the case of measure 18)? It might make more sense visually to either add the held note to the following measure or simply add a short tie to the held note and go about your regular business in the next measure.

Great job. I love your quick, flighty moments, like measure 12. I also think this could be developed into a longer composition. Have you studied any guitar pieces by Takemitsu? You might get something out of them, especially In the Woods:

You'd be WHAT if somebody liked it???

Come on, this is great! Now, I know zip about guitar, so I don't really know what to say. I do like the technical aspect of this, which makes it very "appealing" so to speak.

And I do think that while this is certainly not tonal by any stretch of the imagination, there is definitely a sense of "a" as almost a cadence, I guess.

Also, is this you playing this? Because if it is, I think you played extremely well! :)

Thanks for uploading,

a me sembra anche registrato benissimo, complimenti x l'esecuzione.

è vero xò che si soffre un pò la frammentazione, nel senso che i frammenti sono molto belli e meritavano di essere sviluppati di +

sei molto bravo, ciao.

Thank you! :D

I guess the thing with the stems is a mistake. I've corrected those parts. I didn't know him, but his music sounds quite interesting!

Grazie mille! :D

Come fai a sapere che capisco l'italiano? xD

Beh, la frammentazione fa un po' parte della composizione stessa. :)
