Mass in b (incomplete)

Often times I wondered if I was ever going to write a choral piece knowing how much I loved to hear the harmonies in my choir. After hearing a lutheran choir sing (first time ever hearing a choir me being the public) those gorgeous harmonies, I desired to write a piece for them. And well here it is my first choral piece. This kyrie expresses the grief I had some time in the past. It took me about a week to complete the scheme and the development and about 2 months to change minor things and eventually the ending. The angus dei took me less time to finish. I wrote this piece in about a day or so.

I had some difficulties with the kyrie specially(all that I wanted to express in that piece is placed successfully within the walls of those harmonies) because I took a great amount of time making sure my soul was in it.

I didn't use a specific technique other than respecting the rules in 4 part writing. I want to share this 2 pieces with you, but specially the kyrie YC because it's one, if not, the most personal piece I have ever composed, and I was wondering if I could share it with you;therefore, I want to thank you if you are taking the time to listen a little bit of me.

Comments are appreciated. ( short or long in length) they are very welcomed. I will take time to answer you personally if you give me a chance.

Thank you.

By the way, here are two pieces of the 5 movements from my mass. I already started on the Credo, Gloria. Since those are the longest I need more time to finish them. I haven't touch the Sanctus yet.

I liked the harmonies especially in the Kyrie, very nice for a choral piece. In my opinion the melody is simple, almost overly so at times, but the harmonies make it work. In the right place with the right choir, I would say it could be a very beautiful piece.

first time somebody says that something I wrote would sound beautiful in the in the long term.

Thanks for your time ... (your name please) I hate calling you horn...

We're all talking about the same Kyrie here?? What I downloaded was scored for Woodwind quintet. If this was intentional - there is no way to tell how the text fits with the notes.

There are a number of choral "experts" who frequent these forums, but if you are looking for constructive critisism or a serious review, you must figure out a way to include the text in the score.

I appreciate your time and effort. Reviews are more than welcomed.

here it is the score of the kyrie. I arranged it for winds as to simulate the voices.(I don't have a voice sounding option)

I looked at the Kyrie. The music is just fine. I like it, as a matter of fact. The notation just has some problems. The soprano and the alto staves should be switched, first of all. If you leave it as is, you'll end up with notes MUCH too high for the altos and much too low for the sopranos. Also, the tenor staff should be written with the correct clef, which looks like a treble clef with an 8 under it that lowers it by an octave so it is much easier to read. Just select the clef tool, right click on the clef handle, click "Select Clef," and choose the correct clef. That is all I see that's wrong with it. I like the sound of the music very much, although there is a spot here and there that could use some polishing note-wise to make things run a bit smoother. Good piece, though. Keep up the good work!

I appreciate that Adam. Just out of curiosity, could you tell me please which are the measures I should take a look to make things a little smoother.

greetings.

Well, I had changed the voices over to choir voices to listen to the piece, and I think it was mainly them that made some parts of it sound a little... unclear, because the music read just fine When I switched it back over to the Woodwinds, however, it sounded a lot cleaner. There is one spot, though... At measure 16, I think the tenor line should have a B a minor third below the D where it is. Put in a second tenor part, perhaps, and have the B and the D? I think it gives more harmony to that part, and I like it better that way, but that's just me. I'd really like to hear what this sounds like with a choir, instead of midi voices or woodwinds...

javileru,

From reading your introduction, I get the impression that you are not a singer yourself. This is fine. I have written for instruments I do not play myself. But understand, there is usually a learning curve involved when it comes to writing for instruments that you don

Thanks Adam . You said something quiet intersting. The b natural actually works better with the harmony.

At some point I thought about having the altos have the div. on m16 so have the tenors reinforce the d ( it also goes with the melody) but anyway thanks and I ll consider your suggestion and see what I come out with.

very good...very rich and gorgeous harmonies...I wonder where you got that ...they are very bizarre and uncomun be wonderfull at last

wow, great stuff! i have greatly enjoyed the Kyrie, with its unusual and resounding harmonies and fine leading of the discourse, always coherent and effective. you created also a sober and dignified atmosphere, so beautiful and appealing! i would love to listen to this piece played by a real ensemble.

as the agnus dei i am not so sure. i would have to see the score but i dont have sibelius. as heard it sounded nice, with light atmosphere very suited to the text as a whole, but at the same time its musical coherence seems a bit loose... maybe reading the text the melody would make more sense and its turns would be shown as logical.

anyway this is an unusually fine job, specially the Kyrie, really excellent and original! keep composing!

Thanka Frantz...I will soon get the recording of my piece. My choir made a cd of sacred music and included this piece. I am sure it sounds much better.
