Confusione - octet for wind

Featured Replies

This is a octet for flute, oboe, Bb trumpet, Bb clarinet, bassoon, tenor trombone, bass trombone and tuba. It's the first time I've written anything for an ansamble like this, and also the first time i write in this style. Please give feedback and advices!

Any comments? I would rellay like to hear your opinion, I bet you've got a lot of advice to give me. This kind of music and writing is very new to me, so please give some feedback!

Is it possible for you to repost the score as a pdf? my computer won't load a Sibelius file

You write some demanding bassoon and tuba parts! And that's not bad, either, it's about time they got something hard to play. I liked the piece, to be brief. Now, enough compliments, let's get to it.

Two things:

1) The ending was a little uncalled for- you have dissonance and strangeness the whole piece and then you end with a strong, traditional, and happy unison. I guess it made some sort of sense with the title, "Confusione," but I have a feeling that wasn't what you meant (or maybe it was, meh).

2) Formatting issues:There are times when your time signatures don't match the actual meter (notated 2/4 but 4 quarters to the bar) and others when tuplets and other note groups don't use conventional grouping (ie using multiple 3's instead of simplifying notation to 6's, or having WAY too many 16ths in one group). Fix that- also check for rogue unnecessary accidentals and consider revising those and others for easier reading.

Overall, solid. Nice work! Oh, and put up a pdf of the score, people tend to be upset about that :P

I would consider respelling some of the accidentals...

as a structural comment - how about more economy of ideas, or at least introducing these diverse (yet interesting!) ideas more slowly. As a listener, I was forced to choose between which elements I wanted to focus on and pay attention to, instead of appreciating a unified whole. What about listen to the Schubert Octet? :)

The ending was actually written that way on purpose. I wanted to write something a bit unexpected, something that you normally would hear in music from the classical period or in romantic music. The whole piece started out as kind of a experiment where I wanted to combine those styles with a "modern" tonality, but I'm not shure if that is what I ended up with. That is also why I use a theme by R. Strauss in the mid section. I see what you mean, I also find the ending a little out of place, but I'm not shure if I want to change it or not. Any suggestions?

About making a pdf of the score, I dont have any programs to do that with, and I don't have the administration rights needed to download one, since the computer I wrote the score on is locked to my school. I'll talk to my teacher and ask if he can help me!

Thanks for the tip! It does not sound like a bad idea to introduce the ideas more slowly, I'm already working on another version where I try to do just that. I'm not shure if I understood you right, do you think there is to much going on at once, or just "to much" going on in the piece as a whole?
