April 18, 201114 yr I'm 20 years old. I don't know how to read or write music, but I compose music(improvisation I guess). I don't pay much attention to genres of music... most of the songs I listen to are piano songs I think sound good. Regardless, I've been exposed to piano my whole life. Both my parents played often and I was curious as to how they could move their fingers so fast; I had basic piano lessons at a young age, but found them to be tedious and boring. I was always more interested in messing around on the piano seeing if I could make something that sounded good... I'm hoping maybe I could learn something here.
April 18, 201114 yr Well hello! Welcome to the site. I hope you'll enjoy it here. If you're learning to read music, I suggest learning soprano and baritone clef fist :P Yea... not so much! Great to have new members. Just stay active! Heckel
April 18, 201114 yr Well first off, you have a knack for harmony and some nice ideas (if rough) about voice leading (in other words voices moving apart, one staying the same while the other moves). So you have a really good ear. Now, you just need time to expand you horizons and even if you cannot play the music you can study it. What your weakness is for now is form - playing a piece louder and faster with some small variations to an amorphous melody doesn't work if you do it all the time. I'd suggest too learning conducting patterns, eg knowing the difference between 6/8 and 3/4 as well as 4/4 versus say 3/8. I'd also look at the form of a piece - for example - how does a composer introduce a new idea, how does the composer vary the idea. here is a great piece to start from Chopin - really listen carefully to hear how by just having the same exact idea played softly adds contrast or just a shift in key. Listen to the end too - basically the melody is just going down but hear what ideas Chopin uses to do so and link it to the rest of the piece.
